THE CIGARETTE, 1908. The gap between art and portraiture was bridged with dramatic lighting and by retouching to make the smoke more prominent. The Sioux cowboy was likely touring with Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show. Captured in profile, he was wearing a silk scarf, beaded wrist guards, sateen vest, and a hat with a wide buckle band.

The pictorialism movement helped elevate photography to an art form. It is not too huge of a leap to connect this studio image by John A.
