THE CIGARETTE, 1908. The gap between art and portraiture was bridged with dramatic lighting and by retouching to make the smoke more prominent. The Sioux cowboy was likely touring with Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show. Captured in profile, he was wearing a silk scarf, beaded wrist guards, sateen vest, and a hat with a wide buckle band.

The pictorialism movement helped elevate photography to an art form. It is not too huge of a leap to connect this studio image by John A. Johnson to the dramatic vistas of Roland Reed and Ansel Adams. They did not merely take pictures, they made their photographs. Click image to clarify/enlarge on a PC. Through his poetry, books, speeches, and community work, he inspired pride, unity, and cultural awareness, empowering future generations of Indigenous youth.

XIT CHUCKWAGON, 1910. Renowned photographer Evelyn Cameron captured many views of XIT personnel. By the early 1880s, the Texas-based XIT was trailing cattle to the open ranges of Eastern Montana to fatten them for a year or two before shipping to Chicago. The XIT ran cattle on about 1 million acres, a land area equal to 69 times the size of Manhattan. Operating primarily in Prairie and Dawson Counties, the XIT had line camps as far west as Sunday Creek near Miles City.

Four horses were pulling the heavy wagon, topped by three bundles of tent canvas, to the next camp location. The Enlarged Homestead Act of 1909 drew huge numbers of optimistic people who wanted to try dry-land farming and claim their 320 acres. XIT operations were winding down by the date of the photograph. Few people realize that the ancestors of Native Americans arrived in North America around 15,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, they built a rich world of diverse communities, complex societies, and distinct cultures—each deeply rooted in the land.

Before Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas in 1492, the Indigenous population is estimated to have reached over 70 million. What is now the United States was home to roughly 562 tribes, each with its own language, traditions, and a deep spiritual connection to nature.

Some of the largest and most well-known tribes include the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Iroquois, Apache, Comanche, Pawnee, Choctaw, Mohawk, Cree, and Ojibwa—each once flourishing and sovereign across vast regions of the continent.

The map below is a rare artifact that captures North America before European contact—a time many refer to as the “Glory Days” of Indigenous nations. While Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztec fell early to Spanish conquest, many interior North American tribes remained autonomous, some resisting colonial forces well into the 19th and even 20th centuries.

At their peak, Native peoples across the Americas spoke close to 4,000 languages, reflecting a cultural diversity on par with the greatest civilizations in human history.

But the European conquest that began in 1492 brought catastrophe: pandemics, warfare, forced displacement, and slavery caused a dramatic collapse in Indigenous populations. When the United States was founded, Native tribes were officially regarded as “semi-sovereign nations,” yet they were increasingly pushed off their lands, silenced, and stripped of their autonomy.

This map is more than a geographic document—it is a memory of a thriving world erased from most textbooks. It serves as a powerful reminder of the richness, resilience, and rightful place of Indigenous peoples in the history of this land—before that history was rewritten by those who came to conquer it.
