Super Falcons Crowned African Champions for a Record 10th Time, Stage Dramatic Comeback to Defeat Morocco 3–2 in WAFCON 2025 Final

By King Eze
July 26, 2025

In one of the most dramatic and emotionally charged finals in African football history, Nigeria’s Super Falcons were crowned champions of Africa for a record 10th time, coming from behind to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
This historic triumph, watched by millions across the globe, not only reaffirms Nigeria’s supremacy in women’s football on the continent but also highlights the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

A Final Full of Twists: Morocco Strike Early:
The hosts stunned the Super Falcons early with a lightning start. In the 11th minute, Moroccan striker Sanaa Mssoudy capitalized on a defensive error to slot home the opener, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Things got worse for Nigeria when Ghizlane Chebbak, Morocco’s star midfielder, added a second goal in the 34th minute with a long-range screamer that beat goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
With Nigeria trailing 2–0 by halftime, many feared that the Falcons’ dominance was coming to an end. But what followed was a remarkable second-half comeback that will go down in African football folklore.

Nigeria’s Comeback: Spirit of Champions:
Nigeria’s resurgence began just after the restart when forward Rasheedat Ajibade was brought down in the box, earning a penalty in the 48th minute. Ajibade calmly converted the spot kick to make it 2–1, reigniting hopes of a comeback.
In the 66th minute, Nigeria drew level through Esther Okoronkwo, who curled a stunning effort from the edge of the box, silencing the Moroccan fans and shifting the momentum completely.
The comeback was completed in the 78th minute when substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo latched onto a low cross from Toni Payne, firing home the winner and sealing a 3–2 victory for the Super Falcons.

Key Match Statistics:
Full-Time Score: Nigeria 3 – 2 Morocco

Goal Scorers:
Morocco: Sanaa Mssoudy (11’), Ghizlane Chebbak (34’)

Nigeria: Rasheedat Ajibade (48’ PEN), Esther Okoronkwo (66’), Chinwendu Ihezuo (78’)

Shots on Target: Nigeria 9 – 6 Morocco

Ball Possession: Nigeria 54% – 46% Morocco

Fouls Committed: Nigeria 12 – 9 Morocco

A Record-Breaking Legacy:
This victory marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title (1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2025), making them the most successful team in African women’s football history. In contrast, Morocco, who were finalists for the second time after finishing as runners-up in 2022, continue to close the gap with impressive performances and growing investments in women’s football.

A Rivalry Renewed:
The Nigeria–Morocco rivalry has grown rapidly in recent years. In the 2022 WAFCON semi-final, Morocco eliminated Nigeria on penalties after a 1-1 draw, but this time, the Falcons turned the tables in Rabat. The final was more than a football match, it was a statement of pride, power, and perseverance.

National and Continental Reactions:
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the nation in celebrating the Super Falcons, calling the team "heroes and trailblazers." He pledged continued support and development for women’s sports.
Sports Minister John Owan Enoh announced plans to reward the players with national honors and financial bonuses. “They’ve not only won a trophy, they’ve won the heart of Africa,” he said.

The Road Ahead
With the 2025 WAFCON behind them, Nigeria now sets its sights on the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers, where they will aim to translate continental dominance into global impact.
For now, the continent celebrates a game for the ages and the rise of a new generation of Super Falcons who wear the crown with pride and promise. fans @

2027 Governorship:
Can Madumere Salvage Imo Using APGA AS PLATFORM.

Breaking...!!!
Prince Ezeakonobi Madumere, MFR, the former Deputy Governor of Imo State, is reportedly in undisclosed high-level talks to join the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) ahead of the 2027/2028 Imo Governorship race.

Although yet to be confirmed officially, multiple political sources suggest that Madumere, a seasoned administrator and grassroots mobilizer, is exploring a political rebirth that could reshape the dynamics of Imo State politics.
Details loading...!!!
But the big question remains:

Will Madumere re-emerge from political hibernation to challenge the old order and reclaim the Rescue Mission ethos he once championed? Or will the ghosts of political betrayal and systemic sabotage keep him on the sidelines?

Prince Ezeakonobi Madumere MFR, kSC, was born on 4 July 1964 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to a royal lineage of HRH Eze Henry Anoruo Madumere and Ugoeze Malinda Madumere. He is the third of seven siblings. Madumere received his early education in Owerri and Lagos, before traveling to the United States where he pursued a career in management and business administration.
He studied at San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas, later advancing to the University of Houston and Texas Southern University. He also played competitive American college football as an outside linebacker. Upon his return to Nigeria, he earned a Master’s degree in History and International Studies from Imo State University, where he is currently completing his Doctorate in the same field.

Prince Madumere's political engagement began in 1998 as Director of Women and Youth Mobilization for Rochas Okorocha’s PDP gubernatorial campaign. His loyalty and strategy placed him in key roles in later campaigns, including as Chief Strategist for Okorocha’s Presidential run under ANPP in 2002–2003.
In a dramatic episode of loyalty and sacrifice, Madumere was arrested and imprisoned in 2011 for refusing to betray Okorocha’s campaign strategy during the governorship election. He was accused of organizing a sachet water protest against President Obasanjo and Governor Ikedi Ohakim, an allegation widely believed to be politically motivated. After weeks in detention, civil society pressure secured his release. For this personal sacrifice, Madumere was later honored with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by President Goodluck Jonathan.

After serving as Chief of Staff to Governor Okorocha, Madumere was sworn in as Deputy Governor of Imo State on 30 March 2013, following the impeachment of Sir Jude Agbaso. His time in office was marked by efforts to enhance security, resolve community conflicts, and attract international development partnerships.
However, a rift developed between him and Okorocha in 2018, especially over Okorocha’s attempt to impose his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, as successor. Madumere opposed this move and other controversial decisions such as demolition of business properties and disregard for civil service protocol. This led to a series of unsuccessful planned impeachment attempts, culminating in a controversial purported impeachment declared null and void by the Imo State High Court on September 25, 2018.

Outside politics, Madumere is a dedicated philanthropist. A long-standing member and two-time Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (Imo State Branch), he financed rescue operations during floods in 2015 and 2018, and donated ambulances to the organization.
He is also a strong supporter of sports development. He sponsors an annual football tournament, runs a football academy, and has hosted track and field events to promote youth talent. Madumere has consistently backed Heartland FC, Owerri’s top-flight football club.

The Road to 2027/28: APGA or Another Platform?

With murmurs of Madumere's possible defection to APGA to contest the Imo Governorship Election, Imo’s political landscape may once again experience a seismic shift. His clean reputation, technocratic experience, grassroots appeal, and past resilience could place him as a unifying figure amid growing dissatisfaction with the current political elite.
But his critics argue that re-entering a fragmented political arena plagued with money politics and entrenched godfatherism might be a bridge too far.

Prince Eze Madumere’s story is one of royalty, resilience, reform, and resistance. From the chambers of imprisonment to the chambers of government, from betrayal to vindication, Madumere has seen it all.
Will he rise again, this time from the ashes of political marginalization, to lead Imo State in 2027/28? Or will history record his silence as a reluctant withdrawal from destiny?

The question echoes across Mbaitoli, Owerri, and the entire Heartland of the East:

Uniting the Youths Through Soccer: Reflecting on the Niger Delta Unity Cup 2004

In 2004, Comrade Onengiye Elekima as the National President of (NDYM) launched the inaugural Niger Delta Unity Cup, marking a historic moment for the youth of the Niger Delta region. The tournament, which served as a pivotal platform for uniting the youth, was a demonstration of passion for peace hosted against a backdrop of the region’s fight for justice, peace, and development, showcasing the resilience and unity of its young people.

The official opening ceremony of the Niger Delta Unity Cup 2004, In his welcoming speech, Comrade Elekima spoke passionately about the significance of the event. He emphasized that the tournament represented more than just a football competition—it was a commitment to the future of the Niger Delta youth, a movement toward unity, and a call for sustainable development in the region.
During the event, Elekima stressed that peace and unity were essential in achieving the sustainable development that the region so desperately needed. He spoke against the forces of division and violence, calling on the youth to reject the old-fashioned methods of conflict and embrace a future built on understanding, collaboration, and progress. It was a declaration that the Niger Delta Unity Cup was a turning point in the fight for a better future.

From Local Tournaments to a National Stage: The Impact of the Niger Delta Unity Cup
The success of the Unity Cup in 2004 sparked a ripple effect, inspiring similar initiatives across Nigeria. The tournament set a precedent for using sports as a vehicle for positive change, particularly for underserved communities. What began as a regional competition soon gained national attention, laying the foundation for what would later evolve into the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Unity Cup 2025.
In many ways, the 2004 tournament was a harbinger of the wider Unity Cup initiative. As it developed, it grew into a nationwide grassroots football competition with a focus on fostering unity, peace, and youth empowerment, not just in the Niger Delta, but across all of Nigeria. It became a symbol of how sports could be harnessed to bridge divides and address the pressing challenges faced by Nigeria’s youth, especially in the marginalized regions.
Announcing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Unity Cup 2025
Building on the legacy of the 2004 tournament, the Onengiye Elekima Foundation is now organizing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Unity Cup 2025, a nationwide competition that will engage youth from all corners of Nigeria. Set to take place from February to October 2025, this football tournament will bring together U-20 male and female teams from all 774 local government areas (LGAs) across the country.
With a ₦30 million prize pool, free registration, and a knockout-style format, the Unity Cup 2025 will offer young athletes a platform to showcase their talents and compete at the highest level. This event, like its predecessor, aims to foster national unity, promote peace, and identify and nurture grassroots talent.
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Unity Cup 2025 will continue the work that was started in the Niger Delta in 2004, reaching beyond the region to create lasting impacts on Nigeria’s youth. With support from various stakeholders, including LGA chairmen, state governors, and sports representatives, the tournament promises to be a milestone in Nigeria’s sports and development history.
The Legacy of the Niger Delta Unity Cup
Looking back, the Niger Delta Unity Cup 2004 served as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when a community of passionate, committed individuals comes together to create change. It was a demonstration of the power of sports to bring people together and drive forward a cause. The success of that tournament not only laid the groundwork for future initiatives but also reaffirmed the role of youth in shaping the future of Nigeria.
As we look forward to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Unity Cup 2025, we remember the spirit of the Niger Delta Unity Cup 2004. The goals of unity, empowerment, and peace continue to resonate, guiding the course of this new nationwide competition. Through football, the Onengiye Elekima Foundation remains committed to creating opportunities for youth, fostering cultural exchange, and promoting sustainable development in every corner of Nigeria.

Together, let’s continue to unite the youths of Nigeria through soccer.
