Opioid overdose deaths have steadily climbed in Texas, rising from 4,154 deaths in 2020 to 4,831 deaths in 2021, according to the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. Provisional NCHS data indicates there were an estimated 100,306 drug overdose deaths in the U.S. in 2021, an increase of 28.5% from 2020.

A growing opioid epidemic that has seen increases in overdoses and deaths nationwide has been exacerbated in Harris County due to strained access to treatment and other factors during the COVID-19 pandemic, local officials said.

The grand opening celebration will begin at 10 a.m., and the first 100 customers will receive a free Yi Cha Tea & Coffee mug.

The new Target store planned for Valley Ranch Town Center—located at 11985 Grand Parkway N., New Caney—is expected to open in 2023, according to a May 11 Facebook post from the East Montgomery County Improvement District. Developer Signorelli Co. first announced the planned store, which is expected to be 136,000 square feet, in October, and construction is slated to begin in August.

The new Target store planned for Valley Ranch Town Center in New Caney is planned to open in 2023.

Lori Klein Quinn was sworn in as the new mayor of Tomball at the May 16 City Council meeting to a crowded room.

Klein Quinn said she was humbled by the support, especially the large number of people at the meeting to see her get sworn in as mayor.

"Together we will continue to achieve great things in the city of Tomball ... We are all joined together despite our differences by our love of this town," she said.

Randy Parr was also sworn in for Position 5.
