The Archivists of the Houston Area (AHA!) invites you to submit a page to the collaborative AHA! Zine. We are a few weeks out from our submission deadline of November 30th and we are excited to see the various ways in which people are exploring the topic of COMMUNITY.

This topic can be broadly interpreted though many ways such as:
a review of an AHA! event * write up of an archival collection * a review of a digital archive (such as the Portal to Texas History) * an artwork you created with or inspired by archival materials * collection highlights * upcoming/past history/archival events * project completed in library school.

Check out this sampling of contributions from a few members of the AHA! Board. Together we try to represent the various ways in which one can express the theme of community.

Reminder, you don’t have to be an archivist, librarian, or information professional to submit to the AHA! Zine. Anyone who has an interest in archives is welcome to share their experiences and stories with the Archivists of the Houston Area community.

Submission deadline: Sunday, November 30, 2025

Submit via our Google Form or via email at [email protected]

As we enter into the final stretch of 2025, let's look back on the successes of Archives Month for AHA!

In October, we hosted and attended multiple events in honor of Archives Month and the spooky season. This included Spooky Stories from the Stacks, the annual AHA Archives Blitz held at the Orange Show for the L.V. Hull Archives, and attending 25 at Menil: celebrating 25 years of the Menil Archives!

By attending any of these programs, you helped AHA successfully celebrate another Archives Month! Whether it was telling a spooky story from your own repository & library experiences, assembling materials to be archived & digitized for the L.V. Hull Archives, or visiting the Menil for the 25th anniversary of their archives, thank you for showing up - you guys make all the difference!

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events, including...

Zine Fest: November 15th at the Orange show - submissions are still open for zines!

End of Year Potluck & Tour: December 13th at Moore Memorial Public Library - bring your ID and get a library card!

Have you heard of DJ Screw?

One of Houston's most notable cultural icons, DJ Screw set the landscape for Hip-Hop in Houston throughout the 90's along other big names in hip-hop like Big Hawk and Lil KeKe. DJ Screw specialized in mixing tapes, inventing his own "chopped and screwed" style of slowed down records and repeated rhythms, hence his eponymous DJ title.

Screw's work both personified and developed Houston's unique city life and hip-hop culture, placing Houston amongst other cities deeply tied to hip-hop and rap like Los Angeles and New York City.

Although his early departure from life was 25 years ago, his lasting legacy is still felt through Houston's roots in hip-hop, still inspiring artists to this day.

Learn more about DJ Screw through the University of Houston's "DJ Screw Papers" collection, housing his original records, tapes, and papers!
