Cretan Bronze Age Pithoi with the Ideogram of Wine

Pithos (Greek: πίθος, plural: pithoi πίθοι) is the Greek name of a large storage container. The term in English is applied to such containers used among the civilizations that bordered the Mediterranean Sea in the Neolithic, the Bronze Age and the succeeding Iron Age. Pithoi were used for bulk storage, primarily for fluids and grains; they were comparable to the drums, barrels and casks of recent times.

Pre-firing marks on pithoi have been reported from all over Crete. The value of these marks and their relationship to the pithos are not always straightforward. Some belong to the Linear A script, other marks are identified with the ideograms of fig and wine.
The ideogram of wine is very frequent, especially at Knossos. One pithos recovered in the ninth magazine of the West Magazine Complex of the Knossian palace has wine ideogram incised four times on its body. This pithos is dated to the Late Minoan IIIA period.
Pithoi with ideograms of commodities can be assumed to have held these goods, but pithoi will have contained other commodities in their lives besides those referred to in the ideograms.
