The Alvin Sun & Advertiser

The Alvin Sun & Advertiser Founded since August 8, 1890 "Brazoria County's Oldest Newspaper"
Serving Alvin, Manvel, Liverpool, R

Now in its 133rd year, a newspaper originally called The Alvin News was established on August 8, 1890. Brazoria County's oldest paper, the News was published as a weekly until 1961 when it became a semi-weekly. In 1978, the now daily paper was a single sheet, printed on both sides. The current name, The Alvin Sun was adopted in 1890, and was delivered by paperboys throughout the community on a wee

kly basis. The purchase of the Alvin Advertiser in 1979 increased the ability of the paper to cover a bigger area three times a week. The paper has covered major catastrophes: the killing Hurricane of 1900, a major freeze in 1911, a fire in 1997 that totally destroyed the building that had become the newspaper's home in the 1980s, yet it lives on. In 2008, when Hurricane Ike struck the Texas Gulf Coast area, the paper was able to continue to cover news almost immediately after the storm struck. We continue to provide market advertising coverage reaching over 10,500 homes. Today, The Alvin Sun and The Alvin Advertiser provide news and advertising services to Alvin, Manvel and the surrounding areas.

Editor's Note: Brazoria County Oldest Newspaper, The Alvin Sun, celebrates its 135th Anniversary in August. To commemorate this special event, the newspaper will look back at memories over its history in each edition. In part three of our series, the newspaper looks back at the career of Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. Above is the Alvin Sun's first ever photo taken of Ryan in a Major League uniform when the "Alvin Express" pitched for the New York Mets in 1968 prior to a start in the Houston Astrodome on April 14. Ryan later captured his first ever MLB win. The Sun went on to cover several milestones in the legendary Ryan's HOF career, which culminated with Sports Editor Stephen Collins and photographer Debbie Wilson traveling to Cooperstown, New York in July of 1999 for Ryan's induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
