What happens when type 1 diabetes meets perimenopause and menopause?

This week on Diabetes Connections, I’m talking with Melissa Slemp, who has lived with type 1 for more than 40 years and hosts the Type 1 in Midlife podcast. Her new book, Highs, Lows & Hormones, takes on something that hasn’t gotten nearly enough attention: how changing hormones can affect blood sugar, insulin needs, sleep, weight, mood, and more.

We talk about what women with T1D can watch for, how CGM and pump data may help reveal what’s changing, and why conversations about perimenopause need to start much earlier.

Melissa also shares what it was like to be diagnosed in 1982, find diabetes community years later, and start using an insulin pump after decades of injections.

What makes you hopeful?

Episode 800 highlights!
(Thanks Rob Howe T1D for the great question)

When I started Diabetes Connections in 2015, I was hoping to create a resource I wished I’d had when my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I never imagined we’d still be here more than a decade later!
For Episode 800, we’re turning the microphone around. Podcast producer and friend Jon (JAG) Gay asks me questions submitted by listeners, friends, and fellow advocates about diabetes, parenting, podcasting, community, and everything I’ve learned along the way.
We talk about:
🎙️ The biggest diabetes breakthroughs I’ve covered
💙 What continues to give me hope
👩‍👦 Raising Benny from toddler diagnosis to adulthood
🤔 The topics that spark the most debate
🎧 Some favorite moments from 800 episodes
Most of all, this episode is a thank you.
Whether you’ve listened from the beginning or just found the show recently, thank you for being part of this community. Every download, email, question, and conversation has helped make Diabetes Connections what it is today.
Here’s to the next 800 (can you imagine?!)

⏰Don't miss the Early Bird Special for Moms' Night Out Detroit!

Join us Sept 18-19th in Bloomfield Hills, MI to recharge, renew, and find a diabetes mom community you can lean on all year 'round. This event is for moms of children with diabetes and women with type 1.

Don't wait! The Early Bird Special pricing will be gone after tomorrow, Friday, July 24th.

In the 19+ years since my son was diagnosed with type 1, I have attended dozens of diabetes conferences and events. Now I’ve taken the best elements from those events and created a brand new experience.

We have lots of diabetes technology for you to see and learn about, stress-relieving social time where you can meet other women just like you, and speakers who will leave you feeling energized and ready to face the challenges of T1D

Get all the details about the event diabetes moms call "Therapy for your soul" with the link in the first comment.

We can't wait to meet you!

Does your diabetes social media feed fill your cup or does it drain your energy?

This week on Diabetes Connections, I talked with Risely Health | Type 1 Diabetes Coaching coach & T1D mom Abby Cooper about the emotional side of raising a child with type 1 diabetes.

Abby talked about parents whose entire world slowly shrinks after diagnosis. They’re giving up hobbies, losing old friends and may feel like they’re losing themselves as everything becomes diabetes. What is that doing to our kids? To us? How can we change that without sacrificing safety and good health?

It’s one of my favorite conversations of the year, and I hope it encourages parents and the healthcare professionals who support them to think about diabetes care a little differently.

And everyone tells us they're so glad they didn't.

💙 We're coming to Detroit this September 18–19, and early bird pricing ends Friday 7/24.

Omnipod + Calm! We’ve got a BONUS episode about this new collaboration.

I’m taking with diabetes advocate Meg Cremins, MS, RD, CPT ☀️ T1D & Celiac Meg Cremins about the “Mind in Range” collection now available on the Calm app, which includes meditations designs by people with type 1 and a sleep story narrated by model and T1D Lila Moss.

We all know there’s a big connection between mental health and diabetes management. I love this quote from Omnipod’s CEO: “We hold ourselves to a clear standard: do more for people while asking less of them”

Do you use Calm already? Would you try it for this?
