“HONESTLY, the Spurs played better from start to finish. The only thing they lacked was luck,” Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said live on television immediately after the 90-94 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals best-of-seven series. “As for the referees – there were some absolutely insane decisions that disrupted the Spurs’ rhythm and clearly affected the team’s morale. Anyway, congratulations to the Knicks on their win.” The Knicks’ victory over the Spurs was certainly a long-awaited achievement. Mike Brown’s post-game comments angered Mitch Johnson, and the Spurs head coach immediately responded with a short but extremely angry video, embarrassing Mike Brown to the point that he had to post a clarification…

“I’m sorry… but if you’re not a real fan, then please walk away.”
The head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Mitch Johnson, could no longer stay silent. In the middle of a storm of criticism following the 90–94 loss to New York Knicks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, he delivered an emotional message directly to fans:
“If you’re truly a Spurs fan, then you know our players have poured their sweat, their blood, and their hearts onto that hardwood. A real fan doesn’t turn their back on the team when the scoreboard doesn’t go their way. They stay. They believe. They keep cheering, even when we fall.”

Let me be clear — I’ve coached this game for a long time, and I thought I’d seen it all. But what happened out there tonight? That wasn’t professional basketball — that was chaos disguised as competition.”

https://medianews48.com/we-didnt-just-lose-a-game-we-lost-a-piece-of-basketball-spurs-emotional-response-to-physical-nba-finals-battle-sparks-heated-debate-linh/

I’ve been around this sport long enough to recognize when a team loses fair and square — and tonight’s 106–107 loss to the New York Knicks was not one of those nights. What unfolded on that court went far beyond plays, rotations, or missed assignments. It was about something deeper — about respect, integrity, and the line between hard-nosed basketball and flat-out unsportsmanlike conduct.

When a player goes after the ball, you can see it — the discipline, the intent, the competitive fire. But when a player goes after another athlete instead, that’s not a basketball play; that’s a choice.

That collision? Intentional. No question about it.

Don’t try to tell me otherwise, because everyone watching saw exactly what followed — the taunts, the smirks, the showboating. That wasn’t passion; that was ego. And if that’s what we’re calling “playing tough” in the NBA now, then something’s gone very wrong.

Look, I’m not here to call names or fuel controversy — everyone in this room knows who I’m referring to. But to the league and the officiating crew responsible for this game, hear me clearly: this wasn’t just a missed call. It was a missed opportunity to uphold the principles you claim to protect — player safety and sportsmanship.

You preach fairness, integrity, and accountability. Yet game after game, we watch dangerous plays get shrugged off as “just part of the game.” It’s not part of the game. It’s not excusable. And it’s certainly not the version of elite basketball we should be teaching young athletes to embrace.

If this is the direction our sport is heading — if this is what we’re now willing to tolerate — then we didn’t just lose a game tonight. We lost a piece of what makes this sport meaningful.

Yes, New York earned the 107–106 win on the scoreboard. But make no mistake — the San Antonio Spurs didn’t lose their pride, their discipline, or their integrity. My players played clean, they played hard, and they refused to lower themselves to that level. And for that, I couldn’t be prouder of them.

Still, this game leaves a bitter taste — not because of the final score, but because of what it revealed. And until the leadership draws a clear line between competition and misconduct, it’s the players — the young men who put their bodies, futures, and dreams on the line — who will continue to pay the price.

I’m not saying this out of anger. I’m saying it because I love this game — and I’m not willing to stand by and watch basketball lose its soul.
