The Ultramagnetic MCs is an influential Hip-Hop group hailing from the Bronx, New York City, and was formed in 1984 by Kool Keith, Ced Gee, TR Love, and Moe Love. Tim Dog joined as an unofficial member in 1989. DJ Jaycee came on board in 1990 as a road manager and backup DJ, Big.D became a crew member in 1989. Unfortunately, Rooney Roon was let go after an assault arrest, and Rahzel was also associated with the group during its early years, known for their unconventional sampling, intricate rhymes, and wild imagery.
In 1985, the Ultramagnetic MCs released their debut single, "To Give You Love", followed by the groundbreaking "Ego Trippin'" in 1986. This track was the first in Hip-Hop to feature the "Synthetic Substitution" drum break sample, a pioneering move. The group continued to push boundaries with singles like "Travelling at the Speed of Thought (Original)"/"M.C.'s Ultra (Part Two)", and "Funky"/"Mentally Mad". These releases set the stage for their first album.
In 1988, the group dropped a new school classic, "Critical Beatdown", showcasing innovative sampling techniques, notably, Ced Gee, their primary producer, played a pivotal role in shaping the Golden Era of sampling. The group temporarily disbanded in 1990 but returned in 1992 with "Funk Your Head Up" on Mercury Records, which received a mixed response due to remixes imposed by the label. They followed up with the 1993 album "The Four Horsemen", featuring production by Godfather Don.
The years that followed saw various releases, in 1997, Kool Keith and Tim Dog reunited as Ultra for the album "Big Time". Kool Keith continued his solo career under different aliases, such as Dr. Octagon and Dr. Dooom, influencing many rappers.
In 2001, Ultramagnetic MCs released the single "Make It Rain" / "Mix It Down". Rumors of the group's reunion were confirmed by Kool Keith in a 2005 interview. They released a new album, initially named "Back to the Future—The Bronx Kings Are Back" but later titled "The Best Kept Secret", in January 2007.
In 2010, the group released "Ultra Laboratory Stories", the album dove deep into the Ultra lab vaults of unreleased vintage and current tracks produced solely by TR and Moe Luv, Despite lineup changes, the group's impact persisted, they even performed at the ATP I'll Be Your Mirror festival in 2011. In 2022, they released their latest album "Kool Keith x Ced G".
This isn't their whole story obviously but we always suggest anyone who's a fan of the culture go read more for themselves. Much respect to The Ultramagnetic MCs, we appreciate your contributions to Hip-Hop.
