(Nineteen families came together in 2020 to purchase nearly 97 acres near Toomsboro, Georgia, forming what’s now known as the Freedom, Georgia community. Driven by frustration over systemic injustice and Toomsboro being up for sale, real estate agent Ashley Scott and entrepreneur Renee Walters led the effort to create a space grounded in safety, dignity, and self-determination. Their vision was ambitious—not just for a place to belong, but for a thriving, generational “city” that could embody autonomy, prosperity, and innovation.
Since then, the initiative has evolved into a broader communal project. While initially co-owned by those original 19 families, the land has since grown to include up to 70 families—purchasing up to 5000 acres—all contributing to the vision of a resilient and sustainable community rooted in shared values.
Participants are building out infrastructure, organizing community gardens, and preparing the property for long-term habitation and cultural growth.
Their goals go well beyond land ownership. Central to their plan is a commitment to cooperative economics, food sovereignty, and environmental stewardship. The land is being developed not just as housing but as a model of healing and empowerment—a blueprint for how communities can reclaim space, build wealth, and inspire change.)
