Mrs. Mary Glaude passed away at home yesterday surrounded by her family. Mrs. Glaude served as math teacher and math department chair at Alvirne for 20 years. She also served as the advisor to the National Honor Society for much of that time. Mrs. Glaude was also know for the excellent results her Alvirne students had achieved on their AP Calculus exams.
Every day after school, Mrs. Glaude could be found in her office, tutoring students or mentoring new math teachers, of which she had many. She was hardworking, honest, smart, witty and generous. She was giving of her time and her talents.

Our sincere condolences to the Glaude family which includes her daughter Meghan Glaude, who is an English teacher at HMS.

Good Afternoon Alvirne Families,

I am writing to provide a brief update regarding the evacuations due to fire alarms at Alvirne over the past two days. I am happy to report that the cause of the alarms is not the result of an actual fire or true emergency. Nor is the root cause a direct result of the ongoing construction project. However, we do believe that over time and perhaps more so recently, dust particles have collected in the sensors of the smoke detectors which has caused the sensors to trip and sound the alarm.

In assessing the situation from yesterday, we had created a plan to clean the detectors after school today. That cleaning process would require us to shut the alarm system down; which is not safe to do during the school day. Unfortunately, our system had other plans and the alarm tripped again today causing another evacuation from the school. We did take advantage of this opportunity to do a thorough inspection and cleaning of the detectors in that area which we hope will stop the tripping of the alarm system.

Please know that all students and staff exited the building swiftly and safely in each instance. Also, should an actual emergency occur in the building, we would follow the protocols outlined in our safety plan which would include communication either from the school or school district informing families of the situation as well as the appropriate next steps in the particular situation.

Thank you,

Jason C. Tesini
Interim Principal
