Hello (again) Hughesville!

Day 4 and it's our last day of our "Schools of East Lycoming School District" series, so let's move to Hughesville High School. From A Wing to H Wing and every spot in between, HHS was where I grew up!

"Hughesville High School, located in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, serves the East Lycoming School District. Tracing its roots back to the 1870s, the school has evolved from a small borough building into a consolidated 7-12 junior-senior high school that serves over 700 students today.

1870s–1920s: Early secondary education began in a South Main Street building erected in 1875. As enrollment grew, a newer facility was built, with the Class of 1928 being the first to graduate from it.

1955: A new Junior-Senior High School was built on West Cemetery Street. Students moved into the unfinished building in January 1955, and the Class of 1956 was the first to graduate from this site.

1970s Expansion: As the area population grew, the district expanded, opening Ashkar Elementary School. This era also saw modern milestones, such as the introduction of women's basketball in 1976.

Present Day: The school provides honors, college prep, and vocational programs with AP course offerings. The campus serves students from the boroughs of Hughesville and Picture Rocks, as well as seven surrounding townships.

The school's mission is to inspire and empower all students to reach academic success and live with integrity, with a vision to provide high-quality learning experiences, guided by core values such as perseverance, respect, integrity, discipline, and excellence (Spartan P.R.I.D.E.)."

The years I spent at HHS were some of my best and most stressful years ever. It's a conglomerate of boys and girls, from young teens to young adults and everything, including hormones, stuck in between! High schoolis often where you find your first real love, your favorite sports get more intense and your closswork even more intense.

Hello Hughesville!

Day 3 of our "Schools of East Lycoming School District" series we move to Hughesville and Ashkar Elementary School.

"Joseph C. Ashkar Elementary School is a public Pre-K to 6th-grade school in the East Lycoming School District, located in Hughesville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, known for strong test scores in math and reading, and offering various enrichment programs like arts, drama, and after-school activities.

The student population of Joseph C Ashkar Elementary School is 563 and the school serves PK-6. At Joseph C Ashkar Elementary School, 56% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 59% scored at or above that level for reading. The student-teacher ratio is 15:1, which is better than that of the district. The student population is made up of 51% female students and 49% male students. The school enrolls 50% economically disadvantaged students. There are 37 equivalent full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor.

Joseph C. Ashkar was a long-time, dedicated educator in the East Lycoming School District. He is best known in the Hughesville, PA area for his 31-year teaching career which began in 1935, and for forming and coaching the first wrestling team at Hughesville.

The Joseph C Ashkar Elementary School in Hughesville was built in 1970–1971 and named to honor his memory and legacy within the community."

After moving here from Lander, Wyoming as a 7 year old boy, I entered 1st grade at Ashkar Elementary and started making life long friendships that still exist today. Various amazing teachers helped me as a young boy with the change of life from the open country of Wyoming to the small town charm of Hughesville. While I was still wanting to wear cowboy boots, learn roping and being a cowboy, I quickly learned baseball and other sports, Scouting, as well as developing a love for music and the arts (something my mother instilled in me from a very young age). Over the years, many amazing teachers made a dramatic impact on my life, often asking the right questions and pushing me to learn more and more, especially about weather and science! My first crushes were at Ashkar. My first best friends. My first (of many) wins in 4 square, first touchdown catches and throws in playground football. My first injuries on the blacktop outside of the 5th/6th grade classrooms, on the old wooden jungle gym, the monkey bars that were 30 feet off the ground (maybe not 30 feet but to a small kid, they were high), the skin melting metal slide that seemed to touch the clouds (again, not that high but wow) and the back and forth games of boys chasing girls and girls chasing boys.

I have many good (some not so good) memories at Ashkar. I had so many favorite teachers that it seems so hard to name because I don't want to leave any of them out. They all had a very profound impact on who I would become and I'm greatful for each and every teacher, Principal, school nurse, custodian, school bus driver, and lunch lady that I had. Just yesterday at work I ran into a woman who was a lunch lady at Ashkar, and whileshe didn't remember me, I remembered her and how nice she was and always had a smile on her face when we would come through her line.

I've now watching my own children go to and graduate from Ashkar and move up to the high school.

Did you go to Ashkar? What memories do you have from your time there?

Hello Picture Rocks!

Day two of our "Schools of East Lycoming School District" series brings us to Ferrell Elementary in Picture Rocks.

"Located in Lycoming County, George A. Ferrell Elementary School is a rural K-6 public school in the East Lycoming School District. It is named after George A. Ferrell, Assistant County Superintendent of Schools (1918–1935). Known for academic excellence, it serves approximately 140–150 students.

The current school building was built in 1925 and opened in Van Rensselaer Park in 1926. Originally serving grades 1-12, the school became a pioneering vocational high school

The Picture Rocks School District joined with Hughesville and neighboring areas to form the East Lycoming School District. Ferrell was re-purposed as an elementary school, sending its 9th–12th grade students to the Hughesville high school.

Ferrell has been highly recognized for its achievements, earning the prestigious U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School award (notably in 2008 and 2019)."

Also seen from above is Van Rensselaer Park, Laurel Run (the small stream that everyone has played in), the baseball field, pavilions, playground and even the tennis courts and basketball court at the far end (North end) of the property.

Did you go to school at Ferrell? What are some of your favorite memories? Who was your favorite teacher? Let's relive those memories.

Hello Lairdsville!

I am starting a new project that will show, from the air, all of the schools within the East Lycoming School District here in Lycoming County, PA.

Let's start with Renn Elementary School in Lairdsville.

"Carl G. Renn Elementary School, located at 183 School Lane in Lairdsville, PA, is a rural public school serving approximately 180 students in Pre-K through 6th grade. It is part of the East Lycoming School District.

The school is named in honor of Carl G. Renn, whose family has historic agricultural roots in the Lairdsville and Unityville areas.

The school is highly engaged with its local community. It frequently hosts events honoring military veterans and first responders, such as their annual 9/11 "Freedom Walk".

The school is a pillar of the East Lycoming School District, which encompasses the eastern rural and suburban portions of Lycoming County, including the surrounding boroughs of Hughesville and Muncy. The district has a deep history of consolidating smaller township and one-room schoolhouses into centralized community facilities."

Who here went to Renn Elementary and what kind of memories do you have of the teachers, the classes, the school and the community?

For anyone curious, I wanted to wait until the school year was over, so that I didn't fly and get photos while our kids were at school. So other than some staff, no children were present and certainly can't be identified from several hundred feet up in the air.

Do you have a home, cabin, farm, property, pond/lake or business that you'd like to have me fly over and capture stunning aerial images? Check the final image and contact me. * Due to particular locations near airports and other sensitive infrastructure, some locations aren't possible due to FAA regulations.
