CHOCTAW COUNTY, Okla. ( KXII ) A federal jury has awarded a $9.5 million judgment in a Choctaw County Jail death case.
The verdict came almost six years after the death of Jennifer Crowell, just hours after she was released from a hospital and booked into the county jail.
Court records show Crowell was experiencing a serious medical and mental health crisis -- including difficulty breathing, incoherence, and suicidal tendencies -- but was arrested and jailed without the proper medical clearance.
Inside the jail, she was placed face-down on the floor and put in a cell without medical staff present.
Staff reported she was seizing and unresponsive, and she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The lawsuit alleged systemic failures, policy violations and the use of a dangerous restraint technique while Crowell was experiencing a medical emergency, and the jury agreed.
