In 1888, Ernest Lawrence Thayer, a Harvard educated sportswriter, wrote “Casey at the Bat” for the San Francisco Examiner and subtitled it A Ballad of the Republic. While Thayer’s subtitle suggests his belief that the poem captured the essence of the national pastime, it was not an overnight success.
Back in the 19th century, Baseball was quite a different game than the one played today. Power hitters and the walk-off home run were unusual. In 1888, the leading sluggers of both leagues hit only 29 home runs, combined. Raw power mattered less, which made speed and strategic batting much more important.
Nowadays, the big bruising slugger is commonplace. But when Thayer wrote his poem, a “Casey” would have been a rarity. Today, the outcome of many games is decided in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth; sometimes by a walk-off hit or home run, and sometimes, as in “Casey at the Bat,” a game will end with a deafening strike out.

I signed more books for the store today. I thought I would try to add a bit of artistic flair this time, then I remembered that 1. I'm not very artistic and b. I have run out of flair. So, to the person who ends up with this book, I'm sorry.

Since it’s Earth Day and April is also National Poetry Month, let’s bring these two celebrations together in one festive message for the children in our lives, celebrating our Earth through the magic of poetry!

It’s best to go barefoot
To honor the Earth.
Winter toes, Summer toes;
Sleep and Rebirth.

This wee poem is the “E” page from Wee Witches, and but one stanza from this playful and richly symbolic ABC primer to the world of Wicca and the magic of Nature through the magic of poetry!

Now, let’s all go barefoot to celebrate Earth Day!

MARY ASHBERRY. Skelly “roommates” with the Mütter’s American Giant. Mary had a condition known as dwarfism.
SOAP LADY. No mummy, but after she died her body’s fat morphed into a something called adipocere—waxy, and soapy.
A.J.’s MAMA / THE CURATOR (*ghost-writer…). She cares for the Museum’s collection: over 25,000 skeletons, wet specimens, wax models, instruments, and more.
MADAME DIMANCHE. A wax model on display, but she and her (not really a) “horn” were real. It’s a cornu cutaneum made from the same stuff as hair and nails.
CORSET LADY. Her rib cage and organs got hourglass-squished from wearing a kind of super tight underwear. A teeny-tiny waist was “the thing” in the mid-1800s.
CAROL ORZEL (not seen here) had fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive, or FOP, which causes
bone to grow where it shouldn’t. Carol realized that once she died she could teach people about FOP forever at the Museum.
We salute all the women of the Mütter, animate and not so, for keeping us disturbingly informed
pre- and post- pandemic—our female fans and followers, too!

Thank you to Cerddoriaeth Fynyddig / Mountain Music on YouTube for the wonderful banjo rendition of “Bread and Roses!”
