Spent the morning wandering around campus. I like to stay away for the first week or so and let the students settle in before dealing with "the media." This morning, I figured it was time for the next generation to meet the Downtown Huntington Guy.

The Diamond Teeth Mary Medicine Show is back for 2026 on Saturday, August 22 at Heritage Station!!

The Diamond Teeth Mary Medicine Show will take place at Heritage Station on August 22, from 5pm-10pm. The event is free, open to the public, and will feature local artists and holistic medicine vendors.

This year's artist lineup will feature: The Kitchen Sink-O-Paters, The 1937 Flood, The Huntington Blues Society Allstars, Liz Pennock and Dr. Blues, and Aristotle Jones.

“Diamond Teeth” Mary Smith McClain was a blues and gospel singer as well as a vaudeville entertainer. Her career spanned 85 years, from 1915-2000.

Born Mary Smith in in 1902, Mary was the half-sister of famed blues singer Bessie Smith. To escape an abusive household here in Huntington, Mary hopped a train at modern-day Heritage Station when she was just 13 years old. Since it was before women got full rights, to be permitted to travel by herself, she had to disguise herself as a boy. Her ashes were returned to Heritage Station in 2000.

I got a message taking umbrage with my post about 's walkability saying they would never walk from downtown to Ritter Park. I make that walk 3-4x a week, so I just took pics on both ends to prove my point. 40 minutes round trip.

"While Morgantown consistently ranks as the most walkable city in West Virginia, Huntington is another destination where it is surprisingly easy to get around without a car. With beautiful parks, a gorgeous downtown area, and a college campus, many of the city's highlights are within walking or biking distance. If you are looking for some time away where you can park the car and explore on your own two feet or on the seat of a bicycle, Huntington is a must-visit gem for your bucket list."
