SHSU Priority One We are an on-campus public relations firm staffed by students who seek a career in this field.

We provide public relations services to SHSU colleges, departments, and organizations, as well as off-campus individuals, businesses, and organizations. In doing so, members of the Priority One team get "hands-on" experience in preparing for a future career in the field of public relations.

Priority One students worked hard this semester designing campaigns and outreach strategies for and .texas.

We had the privilege of working with Tracy Chappell of Huntsville Tourism to create a strategic campaign to promote the arts and culture scene here in Huntsville. We analyzed their current efforts and explored how other communities have approached the issue. We created promotional materials, curated lists of important community and media partners, and laid out a timeline for promotion. Finally, we pitched strategies to build brand identity, launch public-facing tactics, and sustain long-term engagement for Huntsville’s arts scene.

At the same time, we were also thrilled to work with Shirley Guzman, the representative of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for the Southeast Texas region. Following an in-depth analysis of prior work from MADD and other similarly oriented organizations, we developed strategies to promote their message to college students. Our team proposed new social media tactics, college campus events, and a brand-new student organization program.

We loved working with both organizations and are confident that they will succeed in their communication goals. Priority One will continue to support these organizations in achieving those goals.

During our time running Priority One this semester, we learned a lot about putting strategic communications into practice. We’ll be bringing that knowledge and experience with us into our careers. Spring 2026, signing off!

The Spring 2026 semester ended with a celebration of the 10th annual Heatwave Film Festival.

Priority One assisted with event coordination for both the opening and closing ceremonies, facilitated tours for prospective high school students, and interviewed Michael Flores, a PR professional and Sam Houston alumnus.

We would also like to congratulate Derren Hall, one of our Priority One members, for winning the Best Creative Photography award!

That’s a wrap on our Slice of Advice speaker series for the semester! Jenna Jackson gave us her day-to-day experience as a Producer for CBS News and discussed her time at Sam Houston as a Writer for the Houstonian and the Huntsville Item. She shared with us the letters she exchanged with her mentor Dan Rather, a fellow SHSU alum and CBS news anchor, during her time at Sam Houston.

We wanted to thank everyone for attending our events this semester! We look forward to seeing you all next semester.

We're excited to present the next speaker in our Slice of Advice speaker series. Join us in welcoming Jenna Jackson! Come connect with Jenna and hear her speak on Wednesday, April 8th from 5-6 PM in DRCB 125. Also, be sure to grab a slice of dessert to go with your slice if advice.

Jenna Jackson, an SHSU alumna, has led a career that has taken her from the newsroom to the boardroom. Starting as a reporter and then producing for CBS, she went on to become the CEO and founder of a full-service TV and film production company, earning awards for her reporting and powerful documentaries along the way. She has also led communications and branding for a major infrastructure and energy services company and built a reputation as a strategic PR specialist. Today, she continues to give back as a member of the SHSU alumni board.
