DRY WEATHER CONTINUES:
Expect a mix of sun and clouds across Alabama today, with highs reaching the 70s. A dry cold front will move through the state this afternoon, bringing slightly cooler air behind it. By early tomorrow morning, most areas will dip into the 40s.

THE WEEK AHEAD:
Dry weather holds steady through Thursday. Highs tomorrow will range from the upper 60s to mid-70s, followed by mid to upper 70s Tuesday through Thursday. A few spots in South Alabama may even touch the low 80s during the midweek warm-up.

A chance of showers returns late Friday into Friday night ahead of the next cold front. With limited instability and weak dynamics, severe storms are not expected, and rainfall totals should remain light.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989:
At approximately 4:20 p.m. on November 15, 1989, an isolated thunderstorm merged with a squall line over southwest Huntsville near Redstone Arsenal. Within minutes, a violent F4 tornado touched down and tore through the southern part of the city.

The tornado destroyed or damaged 80 businesses, 3 churches, 12 apartment buildings, and more than 1,000 vehicles. It continued its path, climbing over Garth Mountain, demolishing Jones Valley Elementary School, and destroying 259 homes in the Jones Valley area.

In total, the storm killed 21 people and injured 463, leaving a lasting mark on Alabama’s weather history.

LEONID METEOR SHOWER:
The annual Leonid meteor shower peaks late Sunday night into the pre-dawn hours Monday, and viewing conditions look excellent. The waning crescent moon will stay dim and won’t interfere with the meteors.

Under a dark, moonless sky, you can expect to see 10 to 15 meteors per hour, with the best viewing window running from midnight Sunday night through about 5 AM Monday.

The Leonids originate from Periodic Comet Tempel-Tuttle (55P/Tempel-Tuttle). This comet was discovered by William Tempel of the Marseille Observatory on the evening of December 19, 1865. He spotted it in the northern sky near the star Beta Ursae Minoris, just below the North Star.

LONG RANGE:
The latest 8–14 day temperature outlook, issued today for November 23–29, continues to show above-average temperatures across the Deep South through Thanksgiving.

There are early signs of a potentially stormy pattern developing for the weekend after Thanksgiving (Nov. 29–30), followed by a push of much colder air. It’s still far too early to pin down specifics, but the pattern is worth watching.

From Candy Baldwin “My son, Colton Baldwin, captured this stunning photo of the Horsehead Nebula from our backyard in Cullman on November 13, 2025. His passion for astrophotography made this incredible shot possible. This universe is God’s artwork, and we’ve yet to witness even a fraction of its beauty.”

LOOKING AHEAD:
A strong upper-level trough is expected to dig across the Southern Plains and Mid-South late next week, bringing the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms. While it’s still early in the forecast period, current data shows significant wind shear associated with this system, along with unseasonably warm temperatures that could enhance storm development.

We’ll continue to monitor trends closely as more information becomes available, but for now, this is something to keep on the radar as we approach the November 20th timeframe. I wanted to provide an early heads-up so preparations and planning can be made if needed.

AURORA? A G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued by the Space Weather Prediction Center for midday Nov. 12. If it happens, and depending on the time, it’s possible some northern lights may be visible across AL with your smart phone camera on long exposure. G4 levels tend to bring Kp values of 8 which AL needs to have a chance to see the aurora. We’ll keep a look out!
