Two years ago, I rebranded my business to reflect what we truly do in our classes: we train for life. Yes, our members lose weight, drop inches, and lower body fat and that’s great. I love it!

Occasionally I see people who used to come to my classes and they feel weird telling me they are going somewhere else now.

It’s ok! I want to see you win. I want you where you need to be.

Or I will see people who haven’t come for awhile and they are embarrassed they are out of shape now.

🍃GREENWAY UPDATE: The Aldridge Creek Greenway is reopening today. The Huntsville Madison County Railroad Authority and its contractors made swift progress the past two weeks to remove debris from the creek and repair the walking path. The City appreciates the support and cooperation of all involved and is excited to welcome everyone back!

Sleep is a topic I am fascinated with and I try to keep up with the latest research and resources. Especially since the older I get, good sleep is harder to find...

A great book on the subject is Why We Sleep by Dr. Matthew Walker. I wanted to share 10 takeaways I think everyone should know about sleep from this book.

1. Sleep is essential for everything

Sleep is not a passive state. There is a lot going on! It's really important process for:

Memory and learning

Emotional regulation

Immune function

Creativity and problem solving

Hormonal balance

Longevity

2. Adults need 7–9 hours of sleep per night

The results of consistently getting less than 7 hours of sleep:

Increases risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s, and cancer

Impairs cognitive performance as much as being drunk

Lowers fertility in both men and women

3. You can’t "catch up" on sleep

Sleep debt accumulates, and sleeping in on weekends doesn’t undo the damage.

Once REM sleep or deep sleep is missed, your brain can’t fully make up for it later. This one made me sad, I try to do that a lot :) on the weekends

4. Sleep is divided into stages and you need them all

NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) = physical restoration, immune boost, memory consolidation

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) = emotional healing, creativity, learning

Both are vital; shortchanging your sleep shortchanges your brain and body.

5. Alcohol and sleep don’t mix

Alcohol may make you drowsy, but it fragments sleep and blocks REM.

Even a small amount disrupts deep sleep quality.

6. Caffeine has a long half-life

The half-life of caffeine is about 5–7 hours. A 2 p.m. coffee can still be in your system at 10 p.m.

Even if you fall asleep, caffeine reduces deep sleep quality.

7. Sleep deprivation makes you emotionally reactive

Your amygdala (what I call your lizard brain) your fear/emotion center becomes hyperactive.

You’re more likely to be anxious, irritable, impulsive, or depressed.

8. Sleep improves learning and memory

Sleep before learning preps the brain to absorb new info.

Sleep after learning helps move it over into long-term memory.

Students and professionals should prioritize sleep, not pull all-nighters.

9. Teenagers are wired to sleep and wake later

Early school start times don’t align with adolescent biology.

Pushing school start times later improves academic performance, mental health, and safety. Not much you can do as a parent about school start times, but do your best to make bedtimes a priority.

10. Lack of sleep slowly and quickly is killing us

It contributes to chronic disease.

Drowsy driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving.

Sleep-deprived doctors and nurses make more medical errors.

You probably know sleep is important, but are you making it a priority? I hope this helps convince you to do so. It will pay off across the board.

Our Story

Where else can you get in great shape, make a ton of new friends, and have fun? Unless you think group lipo is fun, you can only find these things at www.HuntsvilleBootCamp.com. Every class is at your pace and your level. That means no matter what shape you are in now, you can safely get results.

Our classes started in July of 2009. Since then we have been able to help hundreds of women in Huntsville look, feel, and perform their best. We meet people where they are and help them get to where they want to be. You don’t have to be in great shape to start and you don’t need anything more than you have right now. We specialize in helping women lose weight, get stronger, become more confident, and have more energy.

I know it is hard to take that first step to start, but I promise you won’t regret it.
