Longevity

I don't want to live forever, but I do want to live as healthy, strong, and vibrant as I can while I’m here.

Dr. Peter Attia is a physician and longevity expert known for his science-based approach to extending not just lifespan but healthspan focusing on exercise, nutrition, and preventive medicine to help people live longer, stronger, and healthier lives.

In case you didn't see his recent interview on 60 Minutes I wanted to give you the Cliff's Notes version. Do they still have those things? 🤔

I think it's really important for all of us to think about.

What He Said
He coined the term “marginal decade” the final 10 years of life (often around age 75+) where many experience sharp physical and cognitive decline.

His goal: not simply extend lifespan, but maximize healthspan (years of quality, high-functioning life).

He said that traditional medicine (treating disease once it appears) isn’t enough, this new “Medicine 3.0” focuses on prevention, fitness, strength and metabolic health early.

He emphasized that cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂ max) and muscular strength are stronger predictors of longevity than many classic markers (cholesterol, blood pressure).

The Research Behind It
VO₂ max (the maximum rate of oxygen your body uses during intense exercise) correlates very strongly with risk of death from any cause, more so than many blood markers.

Muscle strength, especially grip strength, is a powerful proxy for overall strength, health and risk of decline (including cognitive decline).

The major chronic diseases (“Four Horsemen”: heart disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, Type 2 diabetes) are the biggest drivers of decline in later life.

Preventing or delaying those is key.

Pillars of his longevity framework include:
1. Exercise & movement (strength, stability, aerobic and anaerobic)
2. Nutrition/metabolic health (protein, glucose regulation)
3. Sleep & recovery
4. Emotional/mental health & connection
5. Appropriate testing and screenings (with personalized risk management)

It’s not about adding just years to your life, it’s about keeping your body and mind performing at a high level well into old age.

The best “medicine” isn’t found in a pill. It’s found in strength, movement, metabolic health, sleep and stress resilience.

The next step is simple: start training your body like it’s your most important investment. Move often, do your strength training (safely), eat for energy, and protect your sleep.

Which one do you think you need the most? Start there, make it a priority, and keep at it until it's a habit.

If I can help you with more specifics on what this looks like for you, send me a message and we will get it figured out together.

Keep taking care of yourself as long as you can.

“We fall off a cliff mentally and physically at 75 years old.” But it doesn’t have to be like that! Start taking care of yourself now (whatever age that happens to be) and it will pay dividends later on in life.

The right motivation changes everything

16 years ago, we had one class time and I was working full time on the Arsenal, part time at Huntsville Hospital, and training clients in their homes.

Working all day to make the dream work.

But the ends did not justify the means.

Missing my son growing up was not in my plans.

This post was the time in my life when I made up my mind to make this business work.

Whatever it took.

I can’t thank you enough if you’ve ever come to my classes, read my emails, bought a book, listened to a podcast, spread the word about what I do, or just encouraged me along the way.

When you support my business you are directly supporting my family.

You’ve changed my life, you’ve allowed me to be the father and husband I needed to be, and I can never thank you enough.

I still can’t believe I get to do this for a living. Thank you!

It's time for another edition of "Hack or Wack?" where I break down some of the trends in health and fitness.

In today's edition we talk about one of the biggest nutrition “villains” on TikTok right now: seed oils.

If you’ve scrolled for more than 30 seconds, you’ve probably seen someone waving a bottle of canola oil around like it’s poison.

The message is clear: seed oils = inflammation, disease, early death.
But is that actually true?

Seed oils aren’t magic, and they’re not toxic sludge either.
Like almost everything in nutrition, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

The Science
Seed oils like soybean, sunflower, safflower, and canola do contain omega-6 fatty acids and yes, in huge amounts (15:1 ratio of Omega 6s to Omega 3's is not good), omega-6s can promote inflammation if you’re not getting enough omega-3s from things like salmon, chia seeds, or walnuts.

But your body needs both types of fat. They’re not the enemy.
The problem isn’t the oil, it’s the overall lifestyle.

Here’s What Really Matters
If you’re stressing over a tablespoon of canola oil while…

-Skipping workouts
-Sleeping 5 hours a night
-Eating ultra-processed snacks all day
-Or living in constant stress

…you’re missing the forest for the trees.

It’s not the seed oils breaking your energy, metabolism, or hormones.

It’s the cumulative load of everything else: your sleep, movement, food quality, and mindset.

You can’t out-oil a sedentary life, late nights, or daily stress.

If you’re cooking at home, eating mostly whole foods, getting protein at every meal, and moving your body regularly…

Then that little drizzle of canola oil in your stir-fry?
It’s not the problem.

TikTok fear-mongering sells products. Real health comes from consistency.

So, here’s overall lesson:
Stop obsessing over the 1% details when you’re ignoring the 99% that actually moves the needle.

Want better health?
-Sleep more.
-Move your body daily.
-Eat real food.
-Drink water.
-Manage stress.

Do those things consistently, and then worry about fine-tuning the oils if you want.

Final Answer: Seed Oils — Hack or Wack?
Wack… as a scapegoat.

Hack… when used in moderation in a balanced, real-food diet.
Stop letting the internet scare you out of common sense.

Your health isn’t built on what oil you cook with here and there, it’s built on what you do every single day.

PS- I know I'm the only one still using the word Wack, just bear with me I'm from the 1900s.

What if exercise wasn’t punishment for what you ate, but a celebration of what your body can do?

What if eating healthy wasn’t about restriction, but about fueling the life you actually want to live?

What if getting stronger was about showing yourself what’s still possible not proving what you used to be?

What if taking care of your body wasn’t about the mirror, but about how you move through the world?

What if the goal wasn’t to shrink your body, but to grow in strength, confidence, and joy?

What if “fit” looked different for every woman and yours started with feeling good again?

What if you stopped chasing perfection and started building consistency, one small win at a time?

What if you measured progress by how you feel, not by a number?

What if you stopped trying to fix yourself and started supporting yourself?

What if this time, you believed you were already enough and moved from there?
