Iconic actress, Cicely Tyson had a difficult relationship with her mother who always told her that she was not beautiful. Cicely Tyson’s childhood shaped a lot of who she became later in life. She was born December 19, 1924, in Harlem, New York City, to immigrant parents from Nevis in the West Indies. Her father worked as a carpenter and painter, and her mother was a domestic worker who raised Cicely and her siblings with strict Pentecostal values. Her mother believed beautiful people were evil and insisted her daughters not think of themselves as beautiful.

So, when 14 year old Cicely told her mother she had signed up model in a local fashion show, her mother kicked her out of the house and branded her as possessed by demons. Cicely’s father eventually allowed her to return home after she promised to give up modeling and talk of being pretty.

However, after finishing high school, Cicely worked as a secretary, but one day a photographer for Ebony magazine noticed her striking look while she was walking in Harlem. He asked to photograph her, and that moment launched her career as a fashion model in the late 1940s. After a few years of modeling, she was offered her first acting role, permanently damaging the relationship with her family. 🤯🤩
