A single mother of 9-year-old twin boys says she was furious after discovering that what she thought was a sweet relationship between her children and their elderly neighbor had apparently come with some unexpected conditions.
The mother says she and her sons recently moved into a rental home in a quiet Biloxi, Mississippi neighborhood. Almost immediately, the elderly white woman next door came over, introduced herself and couldn’t have been friendlier. When the twins noticed the basketball goal behind her wooden privacy fence, the woman told them they were welcome to come over and shoot basketball whenever they wanted. She explained that she’d originally had the goal installed for her great-grandson, but he and his family had since moved to California.
Before long, the boys were going next door several afternoons a week. The neighbor even bought them a brand-new basketball after noticing their old one wouldn’t stay inflated. Their mother says she appreciated the gesture and felt fortunate to have such a welcoming neighbor.
Then she started noticing her sons coming home unusually dirty.
When she finally asked how they were getting so filthy just playing basketball, the twins casually explained that their neighbor had told them that if they were going to play basketball in her yard, they had to work too.
According to the boys, they had been pulling weeds, watering plants, picking tomatoes, squash and peppers and doing other small jobs around her garden. Then came the detail that really bothered their mother: the woman had apparently started taking the twins next door to help another elderly white couple with their garden as well.
The boys said that couple had even praised them, telling them, “Y’all some good working boys!”
According to their mother, neither neighbor was paying the children.
What surprised her even more was that her sons couldn’t understand why she was upset. To them, they were helping two older people, getting dirty, picking vegetables and then playing basketball. They apparently didn’t feel mistreated at all.
That left their mother questioning herself.
She says the original neighbor had otherwise been wonderful to her family, and she didn’t want to destroy what could potentially be a great relationship if she was genuinely making too much out of the situation. She ultimately took the story to social media asking whether she was overreacting.
The responses reportedly left her even more conflicted.
Some argued that the neighbors had crossed a serious boundary by putting someone else’s 9-year-old children to work without ever asking their mother. Others were particularly disturbed by the racial optics of two young Black boys doing unpaid garden work for elderly white neighbors and objected strongly to the “good working boys” comment.
But plenty of people saw the situation completely differently. They argued that the woman gave the boys unrestricted access to her property and basketball goal, bought them a new ball and was teaching them to help elderly neighbors rather than exploiting them. Some said pulling weeds and picking vegetables hardly amounted to forced labor, particularly since the boys themselves apparently enjoyed helping.
The mother says she eventually deleted the entire post after the twins’ father saw the controversy and criticized her instead. According to her, he questioned why two 9-year-olds were spending enough unsupervised time in other people’s yards for any of this to happen without her knowing about it and told her she should be more concerned about watching their children than arguing with elderly neighbors online.
Now she says she’s questioning both sides of it: she still believes the neighbors should have asked her permission, but she also doesn’t want to accuse a woman who has otherwise treated her children kindly of something more sinister if her intentions really were innocent.
