Social media never closes, but sometimes management takes a day off to celebrate a milestone birthday. 🎉

My entire family hasn’t gotten together since my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary in 2019—before the world shutdown, remote work became a thing, and Parliament Marketing Group was established.

It was a fantastic weekend! My mom loved it, the grandkids aren’t kids anymore, I’m still just Elaine while Ben is still ‘𝘜𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘦 Ben.’ 🤔

I spent this weekend with two of the people who were in my ear on 9/11. Corey, my producer, was the one who sent me to cover the United Flight 93 crash. Shauna, both a colleague and a friend, helped me find my way there.

We talked about that day. And while our experiences don’t compare to the losses so many endured, everyone who lived through it carries their own memories—and their own way of coping.

Even now, I haven’t fully reconciled what I had to do for my job. On each anniversary, I found myself asking others to re-live what they wished they could forget. It’s not about my trauma—it’s about the responsibility of asking people to share theirs.

Twenty-four years later, I’m still learning what happened that day, and what role I played in telling those stories. To Donn, who lost his wife in the Pentagon… to Tom, who was reunited with his wife in the rubble of the World Trade Center… and to the many others who trusted me with their stories year after year—thank you for your courage and your grace.

Four days off can turn into one when social media’s always on, but it was still a good break! Had an amazing time celebrating SJ’s birthday and hanging out with new and old friends.
