When I look at this photo, I see the best of Chris Johnson. The smile, the handshake, the genuine pride he had in the stories he told.

Chris spent a life telling others’ stories with a joy you can see right here. He believed every student-athlete deserved to be seen and celebrated. His final chapters were spent here with the Exponent-Telegram and Connect-Bridgeport, covering local sports and the young athletes who make our community special. I was fortunate to work alongside him and see how much these moments meant to our local teams and families.

Chris made all of us better. He pushed me to see the game differently and to find the story beyond the scoreboard. Even just a few weeks ago, we were still sharing thoughts about football, comparing what I saw through the lens and what he saw from the booth.

What I will remember most is how much he loved this part, moments like this one. Shaking a hand, sharing a smile, celebrating a young athlete who worked hard for a dream.

Chris was a journalist, a leader, a husband, a father, and a friend. His kindness and dedication will live on through every player he covered and every life he touched.

Rest easy, Chris. You made a big impact in our community.

Marshall Women’s Basketball senior Peyton Ilderton has been selected as Kay Yow Servant Leader for the 2025-2026 season.
As one of 62 players selected across the nation for the Kay Yow Servant Leader award for the 2025-26 season, Ilderton will have an official “Kay Yow Servant Leader” patch on her jersey throughout the season.
“I want to say how honored I am to be selected as one of the Kay Yow Leadership Servant award winners,” Ilderton said following a team celebratory surprise announcement. “It’s truly an honor and I will wear this patch with pride. I know that so many people are impacted by breast cancer and I plan to use my platform to advocate for those people and to help promote research to help all with this cancer.”
All teams across women’s basketball have an official “Play4Kay” game annually. The Herd has worn special pink uniforms for this game and will do so for the 25-26 season on Jan. 31 against Louisiana.
