Appreciation to the Cape Cod Times and The Barnstable Patriot for pieces about BEFORE SALEM. . . . which starts Monday Tales of Cape Cod. Amendments, though: no "historian", just tale-teller; and the "darkly humorous" is my aspiration only; the description came from, I believe, Corey Farrenkop of the Eastham Public Library.
Buyer beware of the 20 for $40 ribeye steaks sold out of a truck at the Cape Cod mall this weekend.

The Success of RedLine’s FLOYD TUNSON’S ACCENT
By John Burl Smith author “The 400th From Slavery to Hip Hop!!!”
The changing world of Black Arts was on full display at RedLine Gallery in Denver, Colorado (7/12-15/2022), as it kicked off “Afrofuturism + Beyond 2022!” “Afrofuturism/Afro-realism” has continued to tweak the consciousness of Black artists as they visualize projects that give our past, not only historical context, but become futuristic projections to fuel their dreams. By combining “Floyd Tunson: Accent!”, with Arish Khan’s “Black Power Tarot Card” exhibition and a screening of the classic and iconic “Invaders” documentary, RedLine gave the Art world a “bold and challenging new vision of how the past can project where Black Arts is headed. This exhibition was a reflection of how artists, of all types, can remain on the cutting edge of change.
My previous statement is based on conversations RedLine arranged and facilitated with a number of Denver artists. Thomas Evans, a rising young photographer, in “They Still Live”, juxtaposed the old with the new, taking intricate masks and African emblems against in gritty urban spaces to highlight just a peak of Dr. Paul Hamilton’s magnificent African Art collection. Sam McNeil, a metallurgist/blacksmith, allowed me to view his “other worldly” creations that featured a thirty-foot-high sculpture of Frederick Douglas that reminded me of the “Tin Man” in “The Wiz!” I returned to RedLine for a different type of conversation with R. Alan Brooks, the graphic creator of “The Burning Metronome” graphic novel. We shared his journey to becoming a professor/speaker to podcasting.
I shared my journey from black power/organizing the “Invaders” to being one of the last two people to meet with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a strategy meeting. We also discussed “The 400th From Slavery to Hip Hop,” as the motivation for creating “The 400th Performance Period,” as a result of missing 2019, the “Quadricentennial Year” history books established as the first slave arrival, “The 400th From Slavery to Hip Hop” projects 2030, as the “Quadricentennial Year” to give descendants of American slavery sufficient time to prepare to commemoration and celebrate this milestone as our birthday. What is most important here is that enslaved Africans were kidnaped from all along the West African coast, as individuals, however today we identify ourselves as one people! No other people the world over have accomplished such a feat, which makes us a “unique people.” “The 400th Performance Period” is envisioned as a platform for those who identify with “Afrofuturism/Afro-futurism” as a phenomenal accomplishment by a people without a prototype and cannot allow this period to pass unheralded. Consequently, we project 2030 as our commemorative birthday! The hope is that other galleries, museums and performance venues will follow RedLine's example, as we project Black Arts as a mainstream artistic endeavor.
Louise Martorano, Executive Director for RedLine provided an unbelieve opportunity, with an introduction an amazing icon, Dr. Paul Hamilton, author of “African People’s Contribution to World Civilizations” (Shattering the Myths), and the first Black elected to the Colorado legislature, among many, many other astounding accomplishments. For me, his most mind-blowing accomplishment is Dr. Hamilton has amassed one of the largest private collections of African Art in the US, if not the world. Dr. Hamilton and his collection defy description. Viewing it, for me, was a spiritual experience. Discussing his life, work and collection, I felt that not only is Dr. Hamilton’s collection an American treasure, but he is a treasure also!!!
Now in his eighties, the thing is, Dr. Hamilton has ceased collecting, and is considering selling his enormous collection. My physical reaction to the thought of losing such a magnificent collection was like being stabbed in the heart. This crushing blow came after Thomas Evans and I had meandered pass hundreds of artifacts centuries old, which I had never seen or knew existed in one place. My thoughts of the public losing access to art of many African people that no longer exist, like our connection to a specific people in Africa. Relief came when Thomas informed me; art lovers in Denver are exploring ways to keep his collection intact and accessible to the public through the establishment of a Dr. Paul Hamilton African Art Museum in Denver.
I did not hesitate to pledge my support to hope, help and work to save an American and world treasure. Since 2020, I have supported the Biden/Harris administration and though the road has been rocky, especially in Congress, saving Dr. Hamilton’s irreplaceable treasure with a museum in Denver, his hometown, should be something Pres. Biden can easily and eagerly support. The fact it will be location in the Midwest, will give descendants of American slavery, as well as others, something to not only draw pride and identify with, it will demonstrate further that the Biden/Harris administrations committed to helping to, not only make Black Arts mainstream in America but internationally. The Paul Hamilton African Art Museum in the center of the nation will be easily accessible to Art lovers East and West of the Mississippi River. Such a bold undertaking by the Biden/Harris Administration will demonstrate a long-term commitment to a community that is among its most loyal supporters!!!
While we hope settlements like these can bring peace to families like Sam Dunn's, it is also our responsibility to ensure that, as a rule, jails prioritize the health & wellness of those in our care. And to you sufferers of paraskevidekatriaphobia, be careful out there. Actually, best not to go out there. At least this is the only Friday the 13th this year; the next one is in January 2023.
Our story also got picked up by The Barnstable Patriot.
“There was a sense of the Holy Spirit when we gathered online and outside,” she said. “During the pandemic we learned we are not a building but a church, a community of faith. As we expand our sacred space, we have an awareness that God’s presence is greater than the building."
Hi there! My father buys this paper every Friday & was quite dismayed to see that the Early Files section is missing from this week's edition. I'm hoping this was a one-time occurrence as the Early Files is one of our favorite sections in the Patriot.
