BLOOD ON DISPUTED LAND: BIKER SHOT DEAD AS KEDJOM-KEKU, BAMBUI LAND FEUD TURNS DEADLY
A long-standing land dispute between the people of Kedjom-Keku and Bambui in Tubah Subdivision, Mezam Division, has taken a tragic and deadly turn.
A young commercial motorcycle rider, popularly known as Asenkain, was shot and killed on Monday by unidentified gunmen while harvesting vegetables on the contested piece of land.
Sources say the victim had gone to the farm to harvest vegetables when he was ambushed and shot at point-blank range on the disputed site. He died on the spot.
The people of Kedjom-Keku claim the parcel is their ancestral land and that they have farmed there for generations and Bambui people also claim the land is theirs.
This killing comes just days after a heated protest by both communities at the esplanade of the Tubah Divisional Office, where tensions over the ownership of the land boiled over.
It should be recalled that the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam had placed an injunction order on the disputed land, restraining both parties from carrying out any activity on it pending a peaceful resolution. Local administrative authorities have also repeatedly called on both communities to respect the injunction and embrace dialogue.
But the question now haunting many is: How did gunmen get access to a disputed land under administrative injunction with guns, and open fire?
The presence of armed men on a parcel that is supposed to be sealed off by the administration raises serious security concerns and calls for an urgent investigation.
As of now, tension remains high in the area, with fears of reprisal attacks. The population is calling on the administration and security forces to act swiftly to arrest the perpetrators, enforce the injunction order, and prevent further bloodshed.
