The story my grandfather told me growing up, Odin's Sacrifice:
Odin journeyed far to the well of Mimir.
Mimir: What can I do for you AllFather?
Odin: I seek a drink of your well. What is your price?
Mimir: An eye is the price of the drink.
Without a thought Odin ripped out an eye, throwing it into the well.
Mimir handed Odin a horn of the well.
Odin drank the horn, and as the wisdom took hold, Odin saw the runes as a glimpse and knew he wanted more. Odin knew the only way to unlock the secrets would be to sacrifice to himself. So Odin hung himself from Yggdrasil, and he impaled himself with Gungnir. Odin hung for nine days and nights with no mead or bread. When at the edge of life the Runes revealed themselves to Odin.
