St. Michael's Lent
August 15- September 29
St. Michael’s Lent is a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and penance observed by some Catholics, particularly those in the Franciscan tradition, from August 15 (the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) to September 29 (the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, also known as Michaelmas). It is not an official liturgical season but a devotional practice rooted in the 13th-century life of St. Francis of Assisi, who had a deep devotion to St. Michael and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
This "mini-Lent" mirrors the structure of the traditional Lent before Easter, excluding Sundays, and focuses on spiritual renewal, battling evil, and seeking the intercession of St. Michael. St. Francis reportedly practiced this devotion, and it’s tied to his receiving the stigmata on September 14 (the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross) during a retreat on Mount La Verna. Practices may include:
Prayer: Reciting prayers like the St. Michael Prayer, the Chaplet of St. Michael, or the Litany of St. Michael.
Fasting and Abstinence: Abstaining from certain foods (e.g., meat) or other sacrifices, similar to Lenten practices.
Penance: Regular sacramental confession, attending Mass, or meditating on Scripture.
Charity: Performing the spiritual and corporal acts of mercy.
The devotion aims to deepen one’s relationship with Our Lord, and to honor St. Michael as a protector against evil.
