Farmersburg Police Chief Cody Strain and Officer Zane Merritt recently stopped by a local daycare to spend some time with the kids, answer their questions, and show them a little bit about what police officers do.

I’ve always believed there is something special about small communities. One of the things that makes a small community strong is having leaders who don’t just work here, but are involved.

Chief Strain has done exactly that. He stays involved, he stays visible, and he understands that policing is about much more than answering calls. It’s about building relationships, earning trust, and making sure our kids grow up knowing that the officers in their community are people they can turn to.

This is the kind of policing that makes a difference, investing in our future generations.

Last week, we shared a sneak peek of some special football jerseys. Today, I want to share the heart behind them.

Mental health awareness, especially for our youth, is something that matters deeply to me. The world kids are growing up in today is very different from the one many of us knew. With social media, the pressure never turns off. It follows them everywhere. Even at home, there’s often no escape.

Our kids need to hear that it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to ask for help. And it does NOT make you weak to admit you’re struggling.

We have to do better about talking openly, supporting one another, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.

That’s why I’m committed to getting the Sheriff’s Office more involved with our youth and our schools, and this is one idea I’m especially passionate about, and hope to partner with every school.

I want to bring Mental Health Awareness to Friday Night Lights.

The Sheriff’s Office will sponsor a game where teams will receive and wear special custom jerseys dedicated to this cause. Cheerleaders will help pass out items to the crowd to spread awareness. We’ll partner with local mental health organizations to be there that night, sharing information, offering support, and simply being present for anyone who needs it.

My hope is that under those bright lights, we can come together, not just to cheer on our teams, but to show our kids that they are seen, they are supported, and they are never alone.

No one fights alone on the field, and we shouldn't fight alone off the field either.
