Past District Governor Carroll Greenwaldt was the guest speaker at Idabel Rotary on Wednesday. Mr. Greenwaldt presented ROTARY 101 where her discussed the seven areas of focus for Rotary and gave examples of the work being done in each of those areas. The seven areas of focus are: Environment, Community and Economic Development, Basic Education and Literacy, Maternal and Child Health, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Peace Building and Conflict Resolution. Rotary International has teams focused and working in each of the areas. Mr. Greenwaldt shared the good news about Rotary's goal of the eradication of Polio. There are currently only three cases of wild poliovirus type 1 world wide. There are two cases in Pakistan and one case in Afghanistan.

In celebration of Juneteenth, Idabel Rotary has put flags in front of businesses and residences around the city. Flags renew for 24-25 on July 4th. The cost is $60 per year and covers six federal holidays. Rotary does all the work, patrons show their patriotism while supporting Rotary. Contact us if interested in having a flag!

Idabel Rotary recently presented checks from philanthropy funds to three McCurtain County organizations. The recipients were: the SOS shelter, the Idabel Public Library Summer Reading Program, and House Upon a Rock.

The guest speaker for Idabel Rotary on Wednesday was Morgan Thorne. Ms Thorne is the Activities Coordinator for Idabel Central Elementary Summer School program. She discussed the programming- AM classes are academic enrichment, and PM classes are activities like various crafts, participation in the Idabel Public Library programs and even Yoga. Ms. Thorne said the teacher/student ratio is 1/10 so every student gets individual attention. Summer school was scheduled for 24 days, M-F from 8 am - 3 pm.

Two for one!
Rotarian Bo McPeak presented information about his wife's massage therapy business. Diedre McPeak is a licensed massage therapist who is certified in both lymphatic and pregnancy therapies. Ms. McPeak has both mobile chairs and tables and performs couples massages as well as individual. She owns In Good Hands which is located on SE Washington near the skating rink.

Valerie Reid was inducted into Idabel Rotary on Wednesday. Ms. Reid works at the Broken Bow Public Library and is active in other community organizations. As a member of Idabel Rotary she joins 1.4 million other Rotarians serving in 46,000 clubs throughout the world. Rotary's pledge of "Service before self" is true of every member as they strive to improve their communities.

Mike Scarborough, the Street Commissioner of the City of Idabel, was the guest speaker of the Idabel Rotary Club and discussed his first year in office, highlighting progress made towards improving street drainage, upgrading equipment, and maintaining cleaner streets. Mr. Scarborough also emphasized the importance of citizen cooperation in these efforts, such as refraining from blowing grass into the street while mowing and ensuring trash cans are not overflowing during pickup.

(Laney J) Laney Hiner of Southeast Oklahoma Radio Station (KKBI + Q102) was the guest speaker for Idabel Rotary on Wednesday. She provided the audience with a detailed analysis of the radio audience statistics for each station, coverage areas, and their future plans to upgrade equipment, in addition to their social media platforms and podcasts hosted by Jay Lindly, he and his wife Laura Lindly are the owners of the station.

IHS Senior, Trace Reesing was honored as the Idabel Rotary 2024 Scholarship recipient, he will be attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University, in Durant, where he will playing football for the Lions while pursuing his degree in Education.

IHS Senior, Sharyl Johnson was honored as the Rotary Student of the Month for May. Sharyl has enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard and will begin her basic training in the summer. She plans to utilize the education benefits to attend college beginning in January. Her future plans are to become an Occupational Therapist.
