“Grandpa was a mystery to me as a kid. I didn’t know how to talk to him. He’d smoke a lot and bring me milk fudge and tamarind candy.”

These reflections, spoken by the filmmaker, Iliana Sosa, early in her documentary, What We Leave Behind, serve as a partial introduction to the filmmaker’s grandfather, Julian Moreno. The film, shot over a 7-year period, is a slowly evolving portrait of her grandfather as he lives out his last years during his ninth decade.

“It’s better than I expected it to be.” That’s what I said to my wife after we finished watching 80 for Brady. From the preview clips (which one should never trust), I expected some ditzy rendition of four older women friends taking a trip to see their hero, Tom Brady, play in the Super Bowl. There is a fair amount of ditziness in this film, but it proves to be rather fun most of the time.

This third installment of the award-winning “My Mother, My Father” film series carries on the story of the Honel family, as they engage in very real conversations about dementia caregiving and quality of life – from idyllic expectations to bittersweet realities. The film is unique in that it provides a nearly forty-year generational (and intergenerational) perspective on how caregiving and end-of-life decisions affect both the persons who are receiving care and those who are giving care.
