Dear artists, let me tell you a story.
I hired a human artist for my 3-book series. I loved their art style and saw potential in it. Communication was great for the first cover, delivered on time, and had the vision I was looking for. I paid them to complete the series, and we agreed that the work for book 2 could be done by the middle of November (this agreement was in June). As October rolled around, I reached out to see what progress was being made on the artwork.
Nothing. No response.
I emailed again. A few days later, again. A month later, again. Crickets each time.
I thought the artist died.
I submitted a claim through PayPal to get my money back since I paid them 600 up front for book 2 and 3 after success with the first cover. That lit the fire under them. Miraculously, I got an email and a promise to have the work done by December 20th. I dismissed the claim through PayPal (which, if you do that, you can't ever do it again for the same transaction), and I was sent 2 unfinished concepts for the covers as an "update."
Now, here i am, January of 2025, a couple weeks after the promised deadline, with no completed art. I emailed the artist several days ago and got what I expected: Nothing.
I'm now out $900 and with the tough choice to find another solution to my 3 book series. I say 900 because now the cover for book 1 will have to be changed to stay consistent with the themes.
Why did I want to tell you this story? Well, because if you ever wondered why anyone would run to AI for free art, that's why. I love artists, and I want to pay people to do work, not a computer. My dedication to helping you was rewarded with theft of $600. In this economy, I don't have piles of money to toss around, and I would sure love to see that $600 ($900) back in my bank account.
I won't be able to recoup that cost because as a starting author, I don't make big sales. Maybe someday, but not yet. I would like you to consider my story if someone pays you to do work for them. I know clients can be picky/annoying/rude/unreasonable, but I don't think a few emails in the span of a month or two are any of those things.
Sincerely,
Pi**ed off author
