🎬🐦 Fun (and slightly freaky) bird fact for spooky season:

According to our “extensive research” (aka Mr. Google 😆), Alfred Hitchcock revealed in 1968 that over 3,200 birds were trained for his classic film The Birds!

He said the ravens were the cleverest... and the seagulls were the most vicious.
As anyone who’s ever tried to enjoy french fries on the beach can confirm… that checks out. 😂

At Wild Birds Unlimited, we’re happy to report that your backyard birds are much friendlier, especially when they’re busy enjoying a fresh batch of No-Mess Blend instead of chasing movie stars. 😉

Where did my birds go??

If your feeders are quiet right now, you’re not alone! October provides nature’s buffet of acorns, berries, seeds, and insects! Birds are simply taking advantage of the feast! 🪶

They’ll be back so keep feeders clean and ready for their return! And while you wait...swing by the shop and check out all of our new gift and garden items that are flooding in for the holidays before the crowds return! 😉

Have you ever tried feeding birds mealworms? They're a fall favorite!

Despite their less-than-eye-pleasing appearance, mealworms are a favored food by many of our favorite backyard birds, such as warblers, woodpeckers, and even robins! Live worms offer optimal nutrition to these feathered friends, while dried ones are easier to store.

Please chat with us about mealworms next time you're in the store!

🦇✨ In the "spooky" spirit of October, let’s celebrate our freaky, flighted, but not-so-feathered friends! (Try saying that five times fast 🤪)

Did you know that there are nearly 1,000 bat species worldwide? These night flyers aren’t just spooky silhouettes, they’re superheroes of the sky!

🦟 A single bat can eat hundreds of insects in one night, keeping mosquitoes in check.
🌸 Some species even help pollinate plants and spread seeds, making them vital to healthy ecosystems.

The most common bats in the US are the Little Brown Bat and the Big Brown Bat. (creative names eh? 😂)

So, the next time you spot one fluttering through your backyard twilight, take a moment to appreciate nature’s little night shift crew. 🌙💛

🍂 Before you grab that rake this fall, think twice! Try leaving your fallen leaves or other organic matter on the ground. It's not only easier for you, but it’s also better for the planet 🌍!

Here are a few good reasons:
Fallen leaves serve as an overwinter habitat for insects, butterflies 🦋, bees 🐝 and other wildlife 🐿️.
Leaves create a natural mulch that helps suppress weeds while fertilizing the soil as it breaks down.

We're proud to support the National Wildlife Federation®’s Leave the Leaves Month to raise awareness about the benefits of letting the leaves lie 🍁.

🎉 To kick things off, NWF is offering Wild Birds Unlimited customers 10% OFF Certified Wildlife Habitat® certifications now through October 31, 2025 with promo code WBU10. 🌼 Get certified here: https://bit.ly/3z0KG0n

Fall means that American Robins can be often seen in larger flocks. They've been known to assemble at birdbaths and prance around in your yard searching for worms.

Ensure your bird bath is clean and the water is fresh for them to stay hydrated and repair damaged feathers. All birds need fresh water so bird baths can also increase the variety of birds in your yard that don’t typically go to feeders like robins and waxwings.

Be sure to check out our full selection of baths and accessories in store to ensure your yard is MOST inviting to those beautiful Robins!

🌿 Today is World Mental Health Day. 🌿

We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge something we’ve seen again and again in our store and with our own customers. Feeding the birds is more than just a hobby. It’s a daily dose of peace, purpose, and connection to the natural world.

Did you know that spending time watching and feeding birds has been shown to reduce stress, ease anxiety, and lift your mood? It’s true and we hear it from folks in our community all the time.

✨ A few mental health benefits of backyard bird feeding:
• A chance to slow down and be present
• That little spark of joy when a favorite bird stops by
• A sense of purpose in caring for wildlife
• A deeper connection with nature, right outside your window
• A calming, screen-free ritual that’s always rewarding

Whether you're refilling feeders, sipping your coffee while watching cardinals, or listening to the cheerful chatter at the bath, you're doing something kind for the birds and for yourself. 💛

We’re here if you ever want help making your backyard a little more peaceful. You’re always welcome in our store, no matter where you are in your journey. 🐦🫶

If anyone needs me this Sunday, I'll be in my chair, curled up with that pumpkin spice latte, just watching the birds.
