A piece of Indiana County history came tumbling down Saturday morning as the stacks and cooling towers at the former Homer City Generating Station. The explosives nearly worked to perfection, although the tallest smokestack did not come completely down. Approximately 300’ of the original 1,217 foot structure remains. Homer City Redevelopment, LLC Vice President Robin Gorman told Renda Media news that that stack came down on top of itself which prevented it from completely collapsing. That caused about a 15-minute delay before the cooling towers were then imploded.
Construction on the power plant started in the 1960’s by the Pennsylvania Electric Company. Units 1 and 2, the two 800’ stacks opened in 1969 and the plant employed 124. Unit 3, the tallest stack, opened in 1977.
The tallest stack stood at 1,217 feet until 7:30 this morning. It was the tallest stack in the United States, 2nd tallest in North America, and 3rd tallest in the world.
The plant had many financial challenges in the early 2000’s. Affiliates of General Electric purchased the plant in 2001, and leased it to Edison International before taking control back. The plant suffered through two bankruptcies.
It was decommissioned closing on June 2, 2023.
Homer City Redevelopment, LLC purchased the property with plans to convert the former coal-fired plant into a natural gas plant.
Back in December Gorman told Renda Media news that the natural gas plant would secure different revenue streams down the road, and using cleaner energy “will enable to the power plant to produce at least twice as much energy as it produced with coal.”
“The increase in energy production could bring new businesses to the area that would purchase power from the plant, creating another source of revenue and more job opportunities,” according to Gorman.
