Andrean, Southmont look to punch ticket to Class 2A semi-state
By Paul Gable - HPG Contributor
Throughout his tenure at Andrean, Chris Skinner has had the Niners in the discussion for teams to watch to make a run for a state championship.
This season is no different, as Andrean finds (10-1) itself playing for another championship opportunity, as the Fighting 59ers take on Southmont (11-1) Friday night.
After falling to Merrillville in the opener, Andrean has reeled off 10 straight wins, including victories over Wheeler and Rensselaer Central to capture the Sectional 33 championship. The 59ers have been getting it done with an offense that puts 26 points per game on the board and a defense that has allowed an average of less than 10 points per contest.
During the course of the season, Andrean has utilized a two quarterback system that has paid off nicely. Senior Brady Elish has thrown for over 900 yards and eight touchdowns, while adding over 400 more yards and five more trips to the end zone. Sophomore Dylan Gore has thrown for over 700 yards and eight touchdowns. Ethan Reyna and Brady Stovall have combined for over 1,000 yards on the ground for Andrean. D1 recruits Ben Novak (Wisconsin) and Reyna provide a huge physicality boost to this 59er lineup.
Aside from a loss to Class 3A threat Cascade, Southmont has been dominant all season long. The Mounties blasted Delphi and Western Boone before holding off Lewis Cass to capture the Sectional 34 championship.
Leading the way for Southmont's offense has been senior quarterback Heath Tolliver, who has thrown for over 700 yards and rushed for over 500 more. He has benefitted from having sturdy SR Avery Stadler in the backfield, as Stadler has rushed for over 1,500 yards and 21 trips to the end zone
The Mounties will counter Andean's physicality with a powerful and experienced offensive line
67 Bryor Johnson SO 6-3, 270
60 Dalton McAllister JR 6-4, 345
55 John Smaltz SR 5-10, 265
78 Cohen Bradley SR 6-2, 340
63 Tyler Walls SR 5-10, 220
Cale Chadd has also rushed for over 500 yards and nine touchdowns for Southmont
Can the offensive line of Southmont hold off Andrean's defense and continue to open monster holes for Stadler and Co. to run through? If this happens, Southmont has a chance in the game. If not, it could be a long night for the Mounties.
One also has to ask how Southmont may handle the long bus ride to Andrean.
Prediction: Andrean 38, Southmont 28
