Andrean, Southmont look to punch ticket to Class 2A semi-state

By Paul Gable - HPG Contributor

Throughout his tenure at Andrean, Chris Skinner has had the Niners in the discussion for teams to watch to make a run for a state championship.

This season is no different, as Andrean finds (10-1) itself playing for another championship opportunity, as the Fighting 59ers take on Southmont (11-1) Friday night.

After falling to Merrillville in the opener, Andrean has reeled off 10 straight wins, including victories over Wheeler and Rensselaer Central to capture the Sectional 33 championship. The 59ers have been getting it done with an offense that puts 26 points per game on the board and a defense that has allowed an average of less than 10 points per contest.

During the course of the season, Andrean has utilized a two quarterback system that has paid off nicely. Senior Brady Elish has thrown for over 900 yards and eight touchdowns, while adding over 400 more yards and five more trips to the end zone. Sophomore Dylan Gore has thrown for over 700 yards and eight touchdowns. Ethan Reyna and Brady Stovall have combined for over 1,000 yards on the ground for Andrean. D1 recruits Ben Novak (Wisconsin) and Reyna provide a huge physicality boost to this 59er lineup.

Aside from a loss to Class 3A threat Cascade, Southmont has been dominant all season long. The Mounties blasted Delphi and Western Boone before holding off Lewis Cass to capture the Sectional 34 championship.

Leading the way for Southmont's offense has been senior quarterback Heath Tolliver, who has thrown for over 700 yards and rushed for over 500 more. He has benefitted from having sturdy SR Avery Stadler in the backfield, as Stadler has rushed for over 1,500 yards and 21 trips to the end zone

The Mounties will counter Andean's physicality with a powerful and experienced offensive line

67 Bryor Johnson SO 6-3, 270
60 Dalton McAllister JR 6-4, 345
55 John Smaltz SR 5-10, 265
78 Cohen Bradley SR 6-2, 340
63 Tyler Walls SR 5-10, 220

Cale Chadd has also rushed for over 500 yards and nine touchdowns for Southmont

Can the offensive line of Southmont hold off Andrean's defense and continue to open monster holes for Stadler and Co. to run through? If this happens, Southmont has a chance in the game. If not, it could be a long night for the Mounties.

One also has to ask how Southmont may handle the long bus ride to Andrean.

Prediction: Andrean 38, Southmont 28

Center Grove tangles with old MIC rival Warren Central in 6A regional action this week

Q&A with HC Eric Moore

Question 1
Congratulations on your outstanding sectional victory. Relative to your pregame preparation, what was your team able to capitalize on to put your group into position to close out the win?

Response
Thank You for your interest.
Our victory was a difficult one at that. It took a late game sack putting Franklin Central in terrible field position, in which they had to go for it on 4th down and the CG defense got a big sack and left the offense in good field position to score to create a 10 point deficit, that led to victory.

Question 2
Who were some players who stepped up and exceeded expectations in your sectional championship victory Friday night?

Response
#42 Frank Hayes was excellent at the LB position along with the other inside LB Paxson. Also outstanding was QB #13 Oscar Sloan who did an excellent job with no turnovers against a very talented and aggressive FC defense. #4 Ricky Lange was the difference in the game at the RB position having over 100 yards rushing and a TD. Also #12 Brody Tilton RB and Kick returning did a great job. TE #2 Dom Berry was probably the MVP of the game with 11 receptions and a great job of blocking in key situations. Defensive lineman #9 Kobe Cherry was excellent in his performance on the defensive line.

Question 3
From a defensive perspective, what are the top 2 or 3 keys to holding your Regional opponents’ offense in check and capitalizing on your opportunities?

Response
The WC offense is fast and explosive in the passing game and has a physical run game offense as well. We must pressure their QB and try to contain the RB’s from making big play drives Getting WC offense off the field on 3rd down will be huge, and trying to create turnovers will be top priority.

Question 4
Offensively, where do you see opportunities to exploit your opponent’s defensive scheme and put yourself into position to put the game away in the 2nd half?

Response
As always, we are a run team. We must possess the football which means converting 3rd downs, that will be huge for our offense. Hopefully by the 2nd half our size and strength in the offensive lines will prevail in wearing down the WC defensive lines and maintaining ball control. Their exciting offense can’t score without the ball, so we must do our job in controlling the line of scrimmage.

Linton, Brownstown Central has making of a track meet

By Paul Gable - HPG Contributor

A year removed from a one point regional final that was a barn burner, Linton-Stockton and Brownstown Central will meet again Friday in a rematch that promises to be as good as last year's battle.

You have two teams with rabid fanbases that have had their sights on Lucas Oil Stadium since the end of last year, and whoever wins could be a favorite to represent the South Thanksgiving weekend at the home of the Indianapolis Colts.

For the Miners (9-3), they enter this game playing solid football, having won eight of their last nine games. In the Class 2A Sectional 39 tournament, Linton-Stockton blew past Mitchell, Greencastle and Sullivan, 173-49. And, they have done it behind the play of Paul Oliver. Last week, he rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 13 touches and threw eight passes for 140 yards and three more touchdowns. On the season, he has thrown for 852 yards and 12 touchdowns and has added another 932 yards and 15 more touchdowns on the ground. As Oliver goes, so, too, does the Linton-Stockton offense.

Reed May's Brownstown Central team is just as strong, having raced out to a 12-0 record to this point.
The Braves absolutely obliterated anyone that came in their path in Sectional 40, outscoring the likes of Tell City, Paoli and Switzerland County, 166-21. In the win over Switzerland County last week, Brownstown Central got touchdowns from Brock Dean, Eli Hutchinson and Preston Garrison in a first half that saw the Braves up 48-0 at the end of 24 minutes of play

On the season, Garrison has been the work horse, averaging 104.5 yards per game. As a unit, the Braves average just under 300 rushing yards a game.

As mentioned, this game has all the makings to be a barn burner, however, the overarching question is simply this -- can Linton-Stockton make enough plays to keep the rushing attack of the Braves at bay? If that happens, the Miners have a big chance. Playing at home in front of that crowd gives them a chance , but if the defense can routinely make plays and hold the Brownstown Central running attack at bay, they can pull off the "upset."

Prediction: Brownstown Central 28, Linton-Stockton 27

South Adams (9-3) at North Miami (9-3) 1A Regional Preview

By Mitch Bruner - HPG Contributor

Game Details: At DuBois Field, starting at 7 p.m. The South Adams Starfires face the sixth-ranked North Miami Warriors.
Recent Performances: South Adams impressed with a 42-14 rout of Hagerstown to advance. North Miami dominated Fremont 51-7 in their last outing.

Series History: South Adams has dominated this matchup, winning their most recent meeting 40-21 on November 15, 2024, in the regional round. They lead the all-time tournament series 2-0.

Key Matchup Insights: North Miami's ground game, as it has all year, powered their recent 51-7 rout of Fremont, setting up a stylistic clash against South Adams' defense. Expect these impact players to dictate the pace at DuBois Field.

North Miami Key Stats:
• Rushing: Lake Musall and Hartley Hoover pace the Warrior ground game

South Adams Key Stats: On the other hand, South Adams brings a pass-oriented, quick-strike aerial attack.
• Passing: Tytus Lehman (Jr., QB) – 258.5 yards per game, contributing to the team's 290.3 total yards per game.
• Rushing: Will Patterson ( #28) – 55.4 yards per game.
• Receiving: Wesley Summersett ( #9) – 110.2 yards per game (team-high 11.3 points per game); Derek McKean (Sr.) – 88.1 yards per game.

Prediction: These two teams share the same 9-3 record. However, South Adams' losses came to teams with a combined record of 32-2: Marian Local (OH), who holds the nation's longest win streak; Adams Central, who is undefeated and the defending 2A state champion; and Bluffton, who was ranked all year in 2A (their only losses were to Adams Central).

South Adams gets North Miami’s best shot, but it is not enough.
South Adams 41, North Miami 21.
Potential Semi-State Matchups and Locations:
• Pioneer (11-1) at South Adams (9-3)
• North Miami (9-3) at LaVille (8-4)

Regional Interview with Fishers HC Curt Funk

The Tigers improved to 8-3 on the season with a sectional championship win over rival HSE and Westfield is up next for a 6A Regional Championship.

Q&A with Coach Funk

Question 1
Congratulations on your outstanding sectional victory. Relative to your pre game preparation, what was your team able to capitalize on to put your group into position to close out the win?

Response
I thought our kids did a good job of picking up their blitz packages and making the appropriate checks. Our first Touchdown by QB Gage Sturgill was a check at the line. The offense called the check and made the adjustments. Gage was able to run for a 30-yard touchdown.

Question 2
Who were some players who stepped up and exceeded expectations in your sectional championship victory Friday night?

Response
RB Ryan Thembulembu had a big game. He ran for about 180 yards and 3 touchdowns. He missed the last 3 games of the regular season, and it was good to see him back in action for the playoffs. Overall, it was a big team win.

Question 3
From a defensive perspective, what are the top 2 or 3 keys to holding your Regional opponents offense in check and capitalizing on your opportunities?

Response
I know it sounds really basic, but it starts with tackling. We need to be a solid at tackling. This will help eliminate big plays. We also need to get off the field on 3rd down. We gave up way too many 3rd down conversions last week vs HSE.

Question 4
Offensively, where do you see opportunities to exploit your opponents defensive scheme and put yourself into position to put the game away in the 2nd half?

Response
Westfield has an elite defense and very skilled players on that side of the ball. In the regular season we turned the ball over 4 times on offense. We must take care of the football. You can't win in the playoffs turning the ball over. This will be a field position game and a tremendous challenge.

Gibson Southern, Indian Creek features an interesting matchup in Class 3A

By Paul Gable - HPG Contributor

The familiar face versus the new upstart.
That is one way to look at the matchup between Indian Creek (8-3) vs. Gibson Southern (11-1).

After enduring a three game skid in September and the start of October, the Braves have been absolutely dominant as of late under second year head coach Max Goodin, who came to Indian Creek after a successful stint as the defensive coordinator at Decatur Central. Since losing 17-14 to Triton Central on Oct. 3, the Braves have scored 40 points or more in every contest and waltzed past Scottsburg and Madison to claim the Sectional 31 title.

Indian Creek quarterback Evan Clark leads the way for the offense, throwing for 1,688 yards and 17 touchdowns, while adding another 535 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. Drew Pingleton has rushed for over 1,000 yards and has found the end zone a total of 12 times for Indian Creek, who defeated Scottsburg, 49-13 last week

As for Gibson Southern, the Titans have been on a mission this season, going undefeated against Indiana teams, and picking up huge wins against the likes of Danville, Heritage Hills, Evansville Memorial and Mater Dei this season. Needless to say, Nick Hart's team has played quality football when it has mattered most.
Last week, the Titans upended Mater Dei, 17-14, in an emotional clash that saw Gibson Southern have to come from behind for the second straight week.

The success for the Titans hinges on the shoulders of quarterback Zach Foster, who has thrown for over 2,100 yards and 29 touchdowns. He has also added 991 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Joining him in the backfield has been the likes of Colin Scherer, who has rushed for 680 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Bottom line: Look, Indian Creek has had a great season, and odds are good, Goodin will draw up some defenses to try and limit Foster, but Gibson Southern, especially, at home, is just too tough. This is a team that has played a tougher schedule, is battle tested and knows what it takes to pick up wins against good teams, especially in tight ball games.

Prediction: Gibson Southern 42, Indian Creek 17
