Indy Media Icon DJ Geno Says Black People's Lack of Support for Paid Events— Not Poor Organization — is Why Circle City Classic is Struggling

In a post stirring debate, Geno Shelton argued the decline of Circle City Classic and Black Expo isn’t due to poor planning, but because the community doesn’t show up for paid events. He noted free parades often outdraw ticketed games, saying cultural traditions can’t survive if people only support what costs nothing.

Many push back, pointing to events like Midwest Fest and BUTTER Fine Art Fair, which show audiences will pay when the experience feels valuable — though others argue those can’t be compared to the massive scale of Classic or Expo.

Another growing criticism is that legacy promoters like Amp Harris have grown out of touch with today’s generation, gatekeeping leadership and recycling the same old-school artists — some of whom he allegedly personally manages — while younger voices and fresh ideas remain shut out.

So what do you think? Is Geno right that the Black community needs to invest more in paid events to sustain traditions like Classic and Expo? Or is it a matter of outdated formats and leadership not adapting to what today’s audience wants? Have you seen Indiana Black Expo take community feedback seriously over the years?
