New Grid episode!!! This week, we discuss SDCC ‘26 (long overdue, apologies there…), Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider and X-Men announcements, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey breaking box office records, and what movies are most excited for going into the last half of 2027?

The Grid is (generally) our weekly, ✨ casual ✨bonus show for supporters of The OBP where we let our hair down and chat about whatever is on the front of our brains — but since we’ve been away (don’t worry, we WILL be back), we’ve made The Grid completely FREEEEE to anyone who wants to listen.

👊 COMIC BOOK COUPLES COUNSELING VS THE OBLIVION BAR 💥

🎙️ LIVEEEEEEEE FROM SAN DIEGO COMIC CON 2026 ☀️

We were invited to join Jake Williams and the IDW Publishing | Comic Books and Graphic Novels team for an episode of The Superlatives — a podcast centered around debating (what else?) specific topics to the comic book world.

Our topic for this episode? Best superhero / villain in comics! It was an incredibly fun recording and one of our favorite moments from this year’s SDCC.

Head on over to IDW’s official YouTube channel to check out this debate, or listen the old fashioned way wherever your stream your favorite podcasts 🎧

Look, I could care less about Magic the Gathering, but when you add a Jen Bartel Thanos card into the mix… IT SHALL BE MINE. And now it is!

*snaps half of my money out of existence*

(side bar: Jen, we all miss you. We haven’t heard from you in a while. Hope you are doing well!)

Had to go out and support our favorite IDW boys this week with the release of the TPB for BTWNS: Rite of Spring by the frustratingly affable Patrick Horvath — and the inaugural first issue of The Horror of Godzilla by our buddies Griffin Sheridan, Ethan S. Parker and Tristan Jones!

(Both are ✨excellent ✨, by the way. I’m soooo not surprised.)

A quick moment worth celebrating: after our Future of Kickstarter panel on Saturday at SDCC, I had to let my inner The Official Jeff Smith Insta fanboy come out for a quick moment, asking Jeff to sign my Bone compendium. Folks were surrounding him quickly after the panel, so I didn’t want to take too much of his time up or leave him there stranded to be bombarded by other fans — so I asked for a quick signature so he could escape.

Jeff instead took about 2.5 minutes to draw a quick sketch and sign the book as people surrounded us. It was an act of extreme kindness that I could tell just came naturally to Jeff in that moment. It definitely meant a lot to me and instantly became a SDCC core memory 🥲

A huge thank you to our friend Pat Loika for perfectly encapsulating the pure bliss of SDCC ‘26 ☀️

I know I say this every year, but SDCC ’26 is officially my new favorite con experience.

Earlier in 2026, I had all but accepted that SDCC wasn’t happening due to treatment siphoning all of my PTO by mid-April (thank you American medical system — another conversation). I’ve come to rely on this special weekend in July over the past couple of years to refill my life-blood tank and see all of my friends in the comic book world.

But because of the selfless efforts (they’ll say selfish, but let’s be honest) of my dear friends Christian Ward and Comic Book Couples Counseling, they were able to rally the comic book community and raise the funds necessary to get me there Friday through Sunday, which still has me gobsmacked — even after the event has come and gone.

I’m not properly articulate or emotionally mature enough to best explain how much their efforts and every single person who donated to that fund mean to me.

After many years now of being a dedicated Wednesday Warrior and curious fan of the medium, I thought I was past ever being surprised by the generosity of the comic book community, but this right here… it surpassed even my high bar.

I love you all for making this happen and I can’t wait to be back in 2027 (none of your money will be required then. Promise.)

The future of Kickstarter with these absolute legends!

Had an absolute ball moderating a excellent discussion about the future of self-publishing with Sean Edgar, Jeff Smith, Eric Podwall, Natalie Andrewson, John Layman and Rob Guillory 🎙️
