🎤 Mic On, Filter Off! 🍺

Stephen Craig, of Eonian Records recently asked Craig Stegall, drummer of GASTEM about some of the legendary venues in their region, as well as ones they had played. Also, one unforgettable memory. See what Craig says below.👇

There was nothing else on the East Coast quite like HAMMERJACKS! Hands-down, the most legendary rock club the 1980s East Coast scene ever saw! All the big-name bands played there just as they were breaking, and Kix was royalty every time they hit that stage. GASTEM never got the chance to play that amazing venue, but we caught plenty of unforgettable shows from the crowd!

Here are some of the big rock joints from our era that we did play:

The Iroquois (Hampton Beach, NH) - Rumored to have been a spot Steven Tyler and Joe Perry would frequent because it was close to Massachusetts, where they lived. People left them alone there. We never saw them ourselves, but our buddies in Wrathchild did.

The Empire Rock Club (Philadelphia, PA) - Famous as the place where Bon Jovi discovered Cinderella.

The Bayou (Georgetown, DC)

The Network (Pasadena, MD) - Formerly known as The Sandbar back in the late ’70s.

The Seagull (Baltimore, MD)

The Rabbit’s Foot (Frederick, MD) - This was GASTEM’s crowd! We packed this place every time!

The Copa (Springfield, VA) - Later became the famed JAXX, where national acts always played while touring the East Coast.

The Mountain View (Smithsburg, MD)

Just a few of the national acts we shared the stage with: Kix, Wrathchild America, Child's Play, and Exodus …YES, THE gods of thrash - Exodus! That night… we were almost f*cking killed. I’m only about 25% kidding.

It happened in York, PA, at a club called Swizzles. Exodus had just lost Kirk to Metallica, and they were brutal, amazing, and all the rest. But whoever thought it was a good idea to have us open that night? Wow…

We got booed. Spit on. This was a club - they could literally reach me… and they did! They turned their f*cking backs on us. We left the stage after maybe four songs. And we even pulled out our heaviest material, just trying to win them over.

Yeah… big “NO” from the Exodus crowd.

We had f*cking lipstick and hairspray all over us - that’s their KRYPTONITE! 😂😂😂

But hey, on a positive note… they felt bad afterward. Gary Holt came up to me and said, “It happens to everyone who opens for us, man. Don’t take it personally.” Then he bought us a case of Heineken, which we used to dull the wounds! 😂😂😂

It was the ’80s… you can’t make that sh*t up!

We graduated pretty quickly from being just “an opening band.” After a solid year of shows opening for KIX, Wrathchild, and Monarch, we signed with James Turner Productions and started headlining not long after.

And don’t forget - our album Catch The Flame came out before most people had even seen us live. We created a vibe like we were already famous… before we ever hit the stage.

Eonian Records is thrilled to announce that PRE-SALES are NOW open for Maryland hard rock veterans, GASTEM, as the band celebrates its 40th anniversary. To mark the milestone, Eonian Records has reissued GASTEM’S long out-of-print albums, Catch the Flame (1985) and Do It Like Wild (1986), in newly remixed and remastered editions.

THESE will be limited pressings, so 🫵 will NOT want to 😴 💤 on these! 🛒

📍 Band: Jones Street
📀 Album: Out Of The Gutter (2022)
🎸 Track Spotlight: What Comes Around
📡 Label: Eonian Records

💡 Trivia: Anthony Focx, Jones Street drummer, was already well known on the local scene and beyond. The percussive powerhouse having appeared in the box office smash Wayne's World and the promo video for Alice Cooper’s hit single, “Poison”.

🧨 Full-force, combat boot-to-the-head, hard rock, with intensity turned up to level eleven.

🤘 This is far from another “strip band.” Combining the energy of Skid Row with the attitude of Guns N’ Roses, Jones Street delivers a unique sound with catchy choruses and pounding grooves.

☠️ Initially, the Jones Street sound was heavily influenced by the likes of AC/DC, SKID ROW, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and Guns N' Roses, but as time progressed the quintet added a heavy, raw, powerful attack all their own. Something that would lead to regular shows at legendary venues such as the Bacchanal Club, Exposure 54, Gazzarri's, Roxbury, Scream, The Cathouse, The Roxy, The Tropicana, The Troubadour, Waters Club, Whisky a Go-Go, and especially FM Station, a venue which Jones Street very much saw as their home away from home.

🚨AVAILABLE NOW!🚨

BOB CATLEY - Middle Earth (Escape Records)

If you’ve somehow MISSED this, Eonian Records has been proudly stocking some of your favorite labels & killer 💿’s in our Rockshop for a few years now!

Just added to our store! We’re excited to bring you one of the latest titles from Escape Records, Middle Earth - the much-loved album from BOB CATLEY.

This stunning edition features brand-new artwork by the legendary Rodney Matthews and includes a bonus track, making it a must-have for collectors and fans alike!

The Bob Catley story is truly one of legends. Born in Aldershot in 1947, he moved at an early age to Birmingham, where he pursued a musical career. During college, he joined several bands, including Paradox, where he caught the attention of Status Quo members Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt.

When Paradox disbanded in 1970, Bob teamed up with Tony Clarkin to form Magnum, a name that needs no introduction in the world of quality British hard rock. The band got their big break when Jeff Glixman produced Chase the Dragon in the early 1980s. By then, Magnum had honed their signature classic rock sound and later found commercial success with Just Like an Arrow in 1985.

While Tony Clarkin later explored a different musical direction with his band Hard Rain, Bob Catley embarked on a solo career. This led to the release of The Tower, with strong support from Gary Hughes of Ten. The album was a major success and was followed by Legends and Middle Earth.

These three albums have since been reissued by Escape Music on both CD and double vinyl, each featuring new artwork by Rodney Matthews and bonus tracks.

Well done to Escape for this re-release. Be advised it is in limited edition of 500 CDs only, in which Eonian had secured only a couple handful! 👀

🚨AVAILABLE NOW!🚨

Saracen - Red Sky (Escape Records)

If you’ve somehow MISSED this, Eonian Records has been proudly stocking some of your favorite labels & killer 💿’s in our Rockshop for a few years now!

One AMAZING title that is NOW available through the Eonian Record’s ROCKSHOP is SARACEN - Red Sky on Escape Records.

Saracen of course arose in the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) days though in with the heavy stuff they built in all sorts of keys and synths and other pomp/prog elements to big things up along with Rob Bendelow’s searing guitar and Steve Betteney’s soaring vocals.

Their glorious debut album – Heroes, Saints and Fools from 1981 – remains a timeless classic of the NWOBHM era.

Line up changes aplenty for Change of Heart a few years later then Saracen disappeared for twenty years before reappearing out of nowhere with Red Sky in 2003.

The Bendelow brothers was back and all was well in the Saracen camp with Red Sky being back to the soaring heavy/proggy/pomp style of the debut.

Some of the earlier songs appeared in re-recorded form along with some new songs. All excellent stuff.

Rob Bendelow’s guitar work is sublime. Cutting riffs, searing solos. Brother Richard’s bass is busy and effective along with Jamie Little’s strong drumming.

Richard Lowe’s keyboard work is so good as he provides all the atmospheric swells, swirls and the glorious synth breaks.

Betteney’s vocals also so on point and powerful. Over the years Saracen haven’t been too prolific regarding recorded output with their last album being Redemption back in 2014, however everything is top quality bar one or two dips on Change of Heart.

They are one of the most talented bands arising from/being connected with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal days of the 1980s. 🤘

Well done to Escape for this re-release. Be advised it is in limited edition of 500 CDs only, in which Eonian had secured only a couple handful! 👀

🚨COMING SOON 🚨

🔥🔥 SURGICAL STEEL 🔥🔥

If you’ve somehow MISSED this, Eonian Records has been proudly stocking some of your favorite labels & killer 💿’s in our Rockshop for a few years now!

TWO amazing NEW titles that will be available SOON in the Eonian Records Rockshop from our friends at Metallic Blue Records are SURGICAL STEEL - Metal From America & Crank It Up 🤘

SURGICAL STEEL - Metal From America

1. Rivet Head
2. Smooth and Fast (feat. Rob Halford on dual lead vocals)
3. Bedtime Baby (feat. Rob Halford on backing vocals)
4. To the Bitter End
5. IOU Nothing
6. No Foolin’ Around
7. Moby Dick
8. Bad Boy
9. Officer Steel

SURGICAL STEEL formed in 1981 with Greg Chaisson (BADLANDS, STEELER) on bass, Jimmy Keeler on guitar, Steve Wilson on vocals, John Aquilino (SCHOOLBOYS, ICON) on guitar, and Bob Milan (LYDIAN, HARLEQUIN, RIP N TEAR, 40 THIEVES, BOB WELCH) on drums. The band went through a few lineup changes but first started recording with Jeff Martin (RACER X, BADLANDS, MSG, LETHAL X) on vocals, Paul Kosanovich on guitar, along with Jimmy, Greg, and Bob.

The band’s first recording was the track “Rivet Head,” which was featured on the Metal Blade Records compilation Metal Massacre II. The band caught the attention of The Metal God himself, Rob Halford (Judas Priest, Fight) and developed a strong friendship with him. Rob joined the band in the studio and recorded dual lead vocals (with Jeff) on the track “Smooth and Fast,” along with backing vocals on “Bedtime Baby.”

“Rivet Head” was really the band’s only true “heavy metal” song, as the rest of their catalog leans more toward melodic metal, in the vein of bands like Scorpions, JUDAS PRIEST (Turbo-era), and mid-’80s Pretty Maids.

SURGICAL STEEL - Crank It Up!

1. Crank It Up!
2. Tonight
3. Hotwire (feat. Rob Halford on backing vocals)
4. Power to Rock
5. See No Evil
6. Rock and Women
7. Gimme Back My Heart
8. Surrender
9. You Were There (feat. Rob Halford on backing vocals)

Surgical Steel’s second studio release, Crank It Up!, features two songs, “Gimme Back My Heart” and “Surrender”, that were included in the movie Thunder Alley, in which the band also made a theatrical appearance.

The album also features Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST, FIGHT) on backing vocals on two tracks: “Hotwire” and “You Were There.” Arguably the two most melodic songs on the album are the title track “Crank It Up!” and “Tonight.”

The tracks “Power to Rock” and “Rock and Women” are reminiscent of many songs from the JUDAS PRIEST album Turbo. In fact, JUDAS PRIEST recorded the song “Wild Nights, Hot Crazy Days” for Turbo, inspired by their times hanging out with the guys in SURGICAL STEEL at the club Rockers.

The band went on to record several more demos with Jeff Martin on vocals before Jeff left to join Paul Gilbert (Mr Big) and form RACER X.

SURGICAL STEEL then recruited vocalist Derek Kendal, who had previously been in the band HO**ER with Scott Travis (HAWK, RACER X, JUDAS PRIEST), and brought in Rik Fox (W.A.S.P., STEELER, SIN) on bass.

After a few lineup changes with Derek on vocals, the band recorded several more songs, including tracks featuring MEGATTACK guitarist Parrish Hultquist.

🚨AVAILABLE NOW!🚨

TEAZE - Live At Liege (Escape Records)

If you’ve somehow MISSED this, Eonian Records has been proudly stocking some of your favorite labels & killer 💿’s in our Rockshop for a few years now!

One AMAZING title that is NOW available through the Eonian Record’s ROCKSHOP is TEAZE - Live At Liege on Escape Records.

Recorded live in 2023 in Liège, Belgium at the Golden Age Rock Festival, Teaze came from Windsor, Canada. There was something almost un-Canadian about the evangelical fervour that Teaze displayed. Brian Danter sang ‘til it hurt. Mark Bradac and Chuck Price invented slam dancing (and that was while playing their guitars). Mike Kozak, who never let his drum kit get in the way of self-expression, regularly went screaming off the stage to be closer to his audience. It was three or four shows in one, and nobody had a label for it.

The first Teaze album was recorded in 1976 at a facility near Toronto called The Grange. The band thought they were taping demos, but an LP called Teaze was released. It ultimately went on to sell more copies in Sweden than Canada.

After that, Teaze was signed by Aquarius Records and the band moved to Montreal. In late 1977, they made an album called On the Loose with producer George Lagios. They began to gain a following, and the next album marked a night of firsts. It was the first show outside of Canada. It was their first outing as a concert headliner. It was their first (and only) live album: Tour of Japan.

The band was growing in popularity. A deal was signed with Capitol in the U.S. At last, Teaze would be on sale “up North” in Detroit. One Night Stands needed to be a great album. It was. It was Teaze’s finest work. The performance was passionate. The music was powerful. The lyrics were lucid and clever. Producer Myles Goodwyn helped the band weave together all of their disparate elements.

One Night Stands included the band’s most memorable songs, “Heartless World” and “Young and Reckless.” Teaze’s fifth and final album, Body Shots, was a strong effort. But at some point between their first and last recording, the members of Teaze had lost their brashness. The fourth LP indicated that their best might not be good enough.

Getting released from their U.S. deal proved to be a decisive blow, and the band fragmented within six months of the release of Body Shots. Perhaps Teaze was ahead of its time. It could be they were misunderstood. The five albums constitute a legacy. Maybe to really enjoy the best of Teaze, you had to be there.

Over time, the various band members went their own ways. But then a get-together at a local restaurant ended with everyone on board to attempt the most unlikely 39-year reunion. The band added local guitar and keyboard player, and long-time friend, Charlie Lambrick to provide the extra instrumentation needed for some of the more intricate material.

Saturday practices throughout the fall and winter of 2018 led to a sold-out Teaze Resurrection show at Windsor’s Walkerville Theatre. The theatre, filled with family, friends, and fans from across Canada, enjoyed the first Teaze show since 1980.

So here is more: united and resurrected, Teaze are still here and ready to rock!

CRAIG BROOKS - Desolation Freeway (Escape Records)

If you’ve somehow MISSED this, Eonian Records has been proudly stocking some of your favorite labels & killer 💿’s in our Rockshop for a few years now!

One AMAZING title that is NOW available through the Eonian Record’s ROCKSHOP is CRAIG BROOKS - Desolation Freeway on Escape Records.

From our friends at Dangerdog Music Reviews - 4.5/5

“Musically, Desolation Freeway is a logical, and natural, extension from Brooks's Touch roots: some very guitar-forward classic melodic hard rock in an AOR wrapper. This is self-evident from the riff driven tunes Takes One To Know One, End Of The Line, Modern Love, and roaring first single, Testify. Perhaps leaning more to the subtle AOR side is Desolation Freeway and Across The Great Divide. Alternatively, Lady Lies is more steady and heavy with tougher riffs and a thick bottom end. Throughout Brooks displays his guitar chops with lively and fiery guitar solos.”

“For a debut solo album of classic, guitar-driven, melodic hard rock, Craig Brooks' Desolation Freeway is a fine first effort, demonstrating his impressive songwriting skills and versatile guitar playing. Recommended for any fan of the genre.”
