Somebody put a madman named Carl Henn on the air in this podcast. Listen at your own risk. Lol. Please take a listen, esp., if you believe that we Americans should have friends around the world, instead of making enemies out of most of our allies.

The podcast series, SoftPower/FulStories, created by Chris Wurst, talks each week to a variety of people, who, for one reason or another, decided to pursue a career in delivering U.S. foreign aid to people in need all over the world. Now, we try to explain why.

I never thought anyone would accuse those of us who worked overseas, supporting health programs, agriculture, democracy, etc., of being part of a criminal enterprise, which is what they labeled USAID, before suddenly dismantling it earlier this year. Shame.

The truth is that USAID was NOT a criminal enterprise, and that the allegations were all proven false and baseless. But that was too late.

Now, we just want to explain to our fellow Americans in simple terms what foreign aid is, how it helps others, and why that should matter to Americans. I like to say that America, powerful as it is, still needs friends around the world, not to be surrounded by enemies.

Think about it. Who wants America to be hated all over the world? Because the minute we stopped providing foreign aid to Africa, Asia, and elsewhere, China and Russia rushed in to persuade our former allies to switch allegiances and side with them against us.

Not a smart move by the Trump Administration. Not good at all.

Sometimes, I think someone is watching over me. I pulled into a camping slot and missed hitting a boulder that was hidden in the shade by about 1/2 inch.

I was focusing on NOT hitting an even bigger boulder, which I avoided by well over 3 feet.

When you travel full time, like I do, you have to find a home and a community wherever you go. It can be difficult to do at times.

In Calgary, I found the Alexandra Writing Center, an amazing place that not only welcomed me, but my dog as well, and invited me to take part in writing groups and sign up for some of their courses.

Today, I joined an online group called the Story Salon in which each of us took turns reading short pieces to the group. Unlike in the US where critique groups often pounce on any perceived error or slip, the Canadians go out of their way to be polite and encouraging.

In each new group I join, there is a moment of anxiety when I reveal that I am American, and hasten to add, 'But I'm against the tariffs!"
Then I close my eyes and hold my breath and wait for the reaction.

They all laughed and said not to worry. By the end of the session, they said, 'You are one of us now. Don't go back. Stay here." Wow.

The sense I get is that there is still an underlying tension between non-RV homeowners and homeowners that travel in and own RVs.

Going deeper into the issue, one has to consider the fact that most homes are not built to accommodate an RV onsite, so there is not adequate space. What about new RV-friendly home designs?

And going even deeper is a sense that one has to conform to the prevailing community notion of whether an RV is an eyesore or a sign of a community that likes to travel. Why oppose the RVs?

To me, this prioritizes the sensitivities of mostly sedentary home-owners over the practical needs of homeowners who RV travel.

New rules for RV driveway and street parking could be in place next spring, as Calgary clarifies year-round storage for the vehicles. Councillors at the Nov. 27 Community Development Committee unanimously approved the measures, which provided guidelines on RV storage for both homes having a driveway...
