This week, as we continue with Latin dance rhythms for the month of September, Kate answers a fun listener question from the comments last week and demonstrates the pasodoble!

Featured piece: España Cañi, written by Spanish Pascual Marquina Narro in the 1920s, from the album “Fiesta!” by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra

Pro tip: if you’re into ballroom dancing or “Dancing with the Stars” check out the adorable Australian 1992 Baz Luhrmann movie “Strictly Ballroom” which is about competitive ballroom and features the protagonists’ search for the true essence of the pasodoble. It’s a real charmer!

We’re covering Latin dance rhythms for the month of September on classical FAQ. Maybe you’re a fan of the aria “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” (“Love is a rebellious bird”) from Bizet’s opera Carmen, and are wondering why it’s more often referred to as “the Habanera from Carmen” than by the name of the aria itself. What’s a habanera? Kate explains, and then we’ll clap it out. You can hear Kate Botello locally weekdays from 6:00-10:00 AM on WICR and WBAA.
