Remember your first day as a nurse? I do. The overwhelming responsibility, the self-doubt, wondering if you’d ever feel confident making critical decisions.
Today I want to talk about Jo - a 24-year-old nurse who just joined our unit. She moved here from Jasper, Indiana, population 15,000. In nursing school, she aced her exams and clinical rotations. But like all of us, the reality of being solely responsible for patient care hit differently on day one.
I’ve watched Jo these past few weeks. She triple-checks medication orders (good). She stays late to ensure perfect documentation (admirable, but unsustainable). She hesitates to call doctors, worried about “bothering” them with questions (dangerous territory we’ve all been in).
Here’s what I wish someone had told me 15 years ago, and what I’m telling Jo now:
You’re not supposed to know everything. The nurse who admits uncertainty is infinitely safer than the one who pretends to have all the answers.
Your questions save lives. That “stupid” question you’re afraid to ask? Ask it. We’d rather explain something twice than deal with a preventable mistake.
Trust your gut. If something feels off about your patient, speak up. Your fresh eyes often catch what we seasoned nurses might miss.
It gets easier, but slowly. Don’t expect to feel confident in six months. Give yourself two years to really find your footing. That’s normal.
To my fellow experienced nurses: Remember what it felt like to be new. Take time to mentor. Share your wisdom. Be the nurse you needed when you started.
To new nurses like Jo: You chose this profession for a reason. You have value to add from day one. We need your compassion, your energy, and yes, even your questions.

I have a 3 1/ 2 month old German shepherd. At times he is precious and cuddly. Other time he does the most irritating behaviors. Last night he began barking and jumping at my husband. We took him out continued barking We feed him Continued barking. We tried playing with him- continued barking Took him for walk barked all around the neighborhood. When home he laid down and went to sleep. We could we ask what was wrong yes we could but we do not understand the language of bark! Did we find his problem I don’t think so. I think we just wore him out. I think this is what we are doing with NCLEX students and new grads. We know there is a problem but don’t know exactly what all the issues are. We need to ask in their language. One they understand! I’m trying to stop the barking that NCLEX and new nurses are doing! I do not want to just wear them out of nursing! Nursing school gives you the textbook. Reality gives you the test.

Nursing Student Tutor

One on One NCLEX Tutoring provides motivation, personalized, one on one tutoring to nursing students before school (TEAS), during nursing school school and after school for the NCLEX test. We help provide some relief from the struggle and frustrations of nursing school and NCLEX preparation. Each student is given a plan for success developed with their input. The process starts with a free consult in which questions are asked about the student’s testing and studying habits/concerns. Then an explanation of what steps are next- an assessment test, analysis and the success plan made just for that particular student. After the plan is made the tutor and the student proceed to work the plan. The tutor is an accountability partner, and encourager and teacher. The cost is dependant on what the student level of schooling is. TEAS and nursing students in school are 35 dollars per session or hour. NCLEX students are 40 per session or per hour.
