We're right in the middle of our look back at roots music of the atomic age, to mark the eightieth anniversary of the first atom bomb test in July 1945.

Five years ago, to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary, I sent out two episodes, and last week, we rebroadcast the first. Tonight we'll hear the second, and then over the next two weeks, we'll have two brand new episodes full of great rockabilly, jump blues and western music full of songs about satellites, fallout shelters, Krushchev and the use of the bomb as a religious or romantic metaphor. We'll also have civil defense announcements from some of the biggest stars of the day. It's a fascinating slice of Americana, and I hope you'll enjoy the shows as much as I have preparing them.

Listen live tonight at midnight EDT on WICR FM 88.7 or stream live worldwide at www.wicronline.org

We've got a very special show for you tonight, to kick off a very special month.

The Atomic Age which followed World War II was a time of great cultural change in our country, which resulted in fear, paranoia and some great roots music. Both blues and country artists, to be joined by the rockers a few years later, worked things like the bomb, the Cold War, fallout shelters, satellites and the like, into their songs, whether the messages were religious, jingoistic or just plain humorous (and there was a lot of humor). To look back on that music now provides a fascinating look into a turbulent slice of American history, plus a lot of the songs and tunes are just flat-out great.

In July 2020, to mark the 75th anniversary of the first atomic bomb tests, I offered two shows featuring music from that time, with some great public service announcements of the time to provide a little context. Those shows were an awful lot of fun to present, and tonight and next week, we're going to replay those episodes. Then on July 20 and 27, to mark the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Atomic Age, we'll have two new episodes with even more great rockabilly, jump blues and western swing songs, and some civil service messages from some of the biggest stars of the day.

I've had a blast putting these programs together for you, and I hope you'll enjoy them.

To listen live, tune in tonight at 12 midnight EDT to WICR FM 88.7 or stream live worldwide at www.wicronline.org

Hey Roundupateers!

I wanted to let you know something really cool we'll be doing in the month of July, which is also our anniversary month.

If you're a student of history, or if you saw the Oppenheimer movie, then you may know that July will mark the eightieth anniversary of the atomic bomb test, which took place on July 16, 1945. This ushered in the atomic age, which led to a lot of fear, paranoia and craziness in this country, but also a ton of great music. Plenty of country and R&B performers, and later, some early rock'n'rollers, jumped on the bandwagon and released songs about the bomb, fallout shelters and Commies, and a bit later, about flying saucers and satellites. Plenty of artists used the Cold War as fodder for love songs, and there were quite a few religious analogies. Pretty fascinating stuff, to be sure.

We did two shows like this five years ago, to mark the 75th anniversary, and they were a lot of fun. So we'll replay those episodes on July 6 and 13, and then on July 20 and 27, we'll have two brand new shows full of the same themed material, with jump blues stars like Amos Milburn, Camille Howard and H-Bomb Ferguson, country folks including Hawkshaw Hawkins, the Buchanan Brothers and Arthur Smith, and early rockers such as Carl Mann, Sheldon Allman and Ray Anderson. We'll also have Civil Defense radio spots from some of the biggest stars of the day, like Tony Bennett, Bob Hope and Art Linkletter.

I'm really looking forward to these episodes, and I hope you now are as well!

Stay tuned, we'll see you on the radio, and above all, keep your roots on!
