This is really worth your time. Especially if you care about soccer or race or equality or justice ... If maybe you could influence the board structure of U.S. Soccer or the U.S. Soccer Coaches Association...
If the power structure does not understand the significance of DaMarcus Beasley ...
If a proposal from Black Coaches can't be guaranteed a hearing ... and there are no Black soccer reps on the board ...
It is not acceptable — period. I know that. I wish I could look the entire board in the eyes right now and tell them that deep in their privileged, empowered hearts, they know it too. And it's time to make room.
Why haven't we won a [men's] World Cup yet, U.S. Soccer? Because our team is not truly reflective of the diverse offerings and strength of our nation. (Same as our institutions....) To truly be representative, we have to lift up people that have been disenfranchised by the mainstream. Probably more white kids from the suburbs can pay for elite soccer training to groom tomorrow's soccer stars, but we're missing a secret ingredient when our applicant pool looks like a tub of mayo. Maybe it's not like this in all places. But in Indiana, the elite level still favors those of northern European heritage. Ask World Cup winners France and Brazil what gives them their special flavor and you'll hear about the benefits of mixing things up.
Just a few thoughts from a woman you never listen to anyway. I miss the days when we could just take it to the field. Hash out our s**t. I still can. But most of you guys are too old and tired now. There is always a place for our seniors, but you must make way for new blood if you want to remain a part of the conversation.
