Campus Citizen

Campus Citizen We are IUI’s independent, student-run media, promising real journalism created with passion and integrity. Follow along to support our journey! You.

The Campus Citizen has been IUPUI’s only student-run independent media outlet since 2011. We strive to provide a voice for the diverse student body at IUPUI. Beyond the written word, we also serve as a distributor of other student media, including podcasts, photography, and videos. The Campus Citizen traces its legacy as an independent student news publication to 1969, when the consolidation of In

diana University-Indianapolis and Purdue University-Indianapolis created the need for a unified student newspaper. As a result, The Sagamore was born in 1971, out of The Component, an offshoot of Purdue West Lafeyette’s The Exponent, and Onomatopoeia, IU-Indianapolis’s combined student newspaper. Throughout its short tenure, The Campus Citizen has reported on corruption and a lack of transparency in student organizations, massive errors in student meal plans, and investigated sexual assault on campus, all the while keeping a spotlight on all the good things being done on our campus by our students and staff. After transitioning to an all-online media source in the Fall of 2015, and finally transitioning to the current site in Spring of 2022, we have been able to cut costs and market efficiently through social media. But our work is never over. We hope to continue growing to accompany the diverse audience on our campus of nearly 30,000 and ensure that new voices are able to be heard, while continuing to bridge the gap between the campus and the surrounding Indianapolis community. All the while, never forgetting who we serve.

Plaid blankets laid over the grass and picnic baskets were filled with a feast of decadent food. Elegant models lay across the picnic dressed in avant-garde dresses. What appears to be the perfect picnic scene, is just another fantasy world created by Monique Burts. From dresses that look like cake, to dresses crafted completely out of paper, Burts puts on wearable art performances to tell her story.

Burts is a wearable artist and costume designer in the city who’s always had a passion for fashion since a young age. She is an IU Indianapolis alumni that graduated from the Herron School of Art and Design in 2023 with a degree in sculpture.

Her collection, “77 and sunny,” was created in response to an exhibition prompt by the Michael O’Brien Gallery at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center. The gallery allowed for a diverse array of artists to present their work.

You open TikTok for the sixth time today, and the first video you see is a stranger sharing news. It could be about politics, celebrities, sports, or even science. You watch the one- to two-minute video, take note of it, and later share it with your peers. But did you find another source before that — or even fact-check it?

I’m an avid TikTok user and come across news content every 15 minutes or so I am on the app. While sometimes I look for it, other times it pops up on my For You Page. I usually take time to fact-check the information, but do other students across campus deal with news on TikTok the same way?

In 2024, Pew Research Center reported that, “Regardless of whether they [TikTok users] turn to TikTok for news, most users see news-related content. TikTok users report seeing funny posts (84%) and people’s opinions (80%) related to current events at higher rates than news articles (57%) or breaking news information (55%).”

On the morning of Oct. 17, 2025, Professor Owen Dwyer’s Environment and Society class gathered outside in the green space between Taylor Hall and the Social Work Building to do some tree planting. This is an eight week course and happened to be their last class.

The Indiana University Indianapolis Sustainability Office has been working with Dwyer’s class to achieve some of their campus objectives this semester.

They are dedicated to responsible resource management, environmental sustainability and creating a greener Indianapolis by promoting urban sustainability. This is part of the larger goal of expanding urban tree planning around campus and in the Indianapolis area.

About 5 percent of the U.S. population — over 16 million people — experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Beyond that, up to 44  percent of college students experience depression.

Combine those pressures with assignments, family separation and shorter days, and it’s clear that wellness isn’t optional, it’s essential.

“We know that students don’t just arrive with textbooks and ready to learn, they arrive with emotional and mental needs,” said Tanasja Poston, who works in the Office of Health and Wellness. “We’re here to let them know these resources are not a luxury, they’re a lifeline, they’re readily available.”

On Sunday, Nov. 9, in downtown Indianapolis, students, leaders and community members from across Indiana rallied for Sudan in the cold and snowy weather.

The day of action was led by the Darfur Diaspora Collective (DDC), a youth-led organization founded in Indianapolis to amplify the voices and concerns of the Darfur community, both locally and globally, to advocate for justice, transform public discourse and mobilize support.

Editor’s Note: The article was originally published on Nov. 13 but was temporarily taken down and revised to correct misquotations and remove sensitive information.

On Nov. 1, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits ran out as a result of the U.S. government shutdown. As of Nov. 11, the Trump Administration agreed to pay up to 65% of SNAP benefits, although there are likely to be delays in the rollout of this funding.

According to the USDA, approximately 600,000 Hoosiers were SNAP participants. Now, with limited and delayed SNAP funding, communities across the country are straining to provide necessary resources.
