Campus Citizen

Campus Citizen We are IUI’s independent, student-run media, promising real journalism created with passion and integrity. Follow along to support our journey! You.

The Campus Citizen has been IUPUI’s only student-run independent media outlet since 2011. We strive to provide a voice for the diverse student body at IUPUI. Beyond the written word, we also serve as a distributor of other student media, including podcasts, photography, and videos. The Campus Citizen traces its legacy as an independent student news publication to 1969, when the consolidation of In

diana University-Indianapolis and Purdue University-Indianapolis created the need for a unified student newspaper. As a result, The Sagamore was born in 1971, out of The Component, an offshoot of Purdue West Lafeyette’s The Exponent, and Onomatopoeia, IU-Indianapolis’s combined student newspaper. Throughout its short tenure, The Campus Citizen has reported on corruption and a lack of transparency in student organizations, massive errors in student meal plans, and investigated sexual assault on campus, all the while keeping a spotlight on all the good things being done on our campus by our students and staff. After transitioning to an all-online media source in the Fall of 2015, and finally transitioning to the current site in Spring of 2022, we have been able to cut costs and market efficiently through social media. But our work is never over. We hope to continue growing to accompany the diverse audience on our campus of nearly 30,000 and ensure that new voices are able to be heard, while continuing to bridge the gap between the campus and the surrounding Indianapolis community. All the while, never forgetting who we serve.

Long rehearsals, creative choreography, schedules and teamwork all lead to one moment: the Regatta stage. For groups such as The Moving Company and Xiphos, that stage is their finish line.

Performances begin at 10:45 a.m.—just 15 minutes after the first canoe race—and last until close at 4 p.m.

The Dog Costume Contest, Regatta Royalty and the stage with live entertainment all started in 2018 at the 10th running of the race.

It's 2009, the air is crisp, orange and golden leaves drift along the sidewalks of IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis). The campus feels almost asleep, but the voices of students rushing between classes fill the silence and replace the emptiness with heartbeat.

Along campus, few notice the glistening canal in the afternoon sun. The breeze carries a sense of fresh air across campus, but also a reminder that fall is near.

The campus was alive, yet disconnected. Students moved to the beat of their own rhythms, with little tying them together outside academics.

On the evening of Sept. 9, the Jags opened their home season under the ideal weather conditions for soccer. The sun shone down on the pitch while a gentle breeze swept across the field. Though the team lost 2-1 in a hard-fought match, chatter and laughter could be heard from the stands as fans enjoyed both the competitive game and the beautiful evening.

The IU Indy volleyball team played its first home volleyball match of the season Sept. 11 against Bellarmine in the opening match of the Hampton Inn Invitational.

The Hampton Inn Invitational has been hosted by IU nearly every year since 2006 through a partnership  with Hampton Inn Downtown. Each season, three Division I opponents join the Jaguars in a round-robin played over two or three days. This year’s field included Bellarmine, Northern Illinois and Gonzaga.

Earlier this year, schools across the country saw a steep increase in cuts to “DEI” programs by the Trump Administration. Now student programs are either being cut, relocated, or losing funding as a result of state and national funding cuts.

Both the LGBTQ+ Center and Multicultural Center, which were originally located on the first floor of Taylor Hall, have been potentially relocated and replaced by the Office of Health and Wellness Promotion and The Multimedia Production Center.

📢 Big News for Student Journalism!

We’re proud to announce our official content-sharing partnership with The Purdue Exponent! 📰✨

This collaboration began with an idea from former Exponent EIC Seth Nelson, and a year later, our Editor-in-Chief (EIC), Abby Godsen, and Purdue Exponent’s EIC Olivia Mapes have made it official.

Together, we’ll be sharing 5+ articles each semester to keep Purdue in Indianapolis students informed and connected. At the core of this partnership is a commitment to journalistic integrity, independence, and student voices.

This is about more than sharing stories—it’s about building stronger student media and amplifying the issues that matter most.
