If you don't have room for an 8-inch dedicated jointer in your shop, a split-fence router table setup is the ultimate workaround for straight-line ripping and edge jointing. The trick to getting a dead-straight edge is all in the setup shown here: you have to shim that outfeed fence so it sits perfectly flush with the apex of your cutter's cutting circle. I usually drop in a high-quality solid carbide spiral upcut bit for this to get the cleanest shear action and avoid tear-out on tricky grain. When you run the stock through, you start with your feed pressure on the infeed side, but the second the leading edge of the board clears the bit and registers flat against that shimmed outfeed fence, you shift your entire hand pressure to the outfeed side. If you keep pushing against the infeed fence after that, you'll end up with an undercut or nasty snipe at the tail end of your board. Take light passes—about 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch maximum—and let the speed of the router do the work. It’s a bulletproof technique for getting seamless glue joints every single time.

Why Is the Starter Pin So Crucial for Freehand Routing?

When routing a curved workpiece without a fence, never push the wood directly into the spinning router bit. This is extremely dangerous and can trigger kickback. Always use the starter pin as your initial fulcrum point.

Standard Procedure (US Woodworking Best Practices):

Pivot & Anchor: Firmly place the edge of the wood against the starter pin first to lock the position.

Ease In: Slowly swing or slide the wood (pivot) toward the bearing bit until it makes full contact.

Transition: Once the wood touches the bearing, maintain constant pressure and begin moving the wood against the direction of the bit's rotation (climb cutting should be avoided here).

The starter pin provides full control during the most critical first few seconds before the bearing takes over directional guidance. Stay safe in the shop, keep your fingers clear!

Ergonomic Jig Design: Adding a wooden block as a handle on top of the template is not merely an accessory. This jig design ensures that the operator's hands always remain in the safe zone, away from the rotation radius of the bearing bit below.

Correct Cutting Direction: To minimize the risk of tear-out on the edge of the wood, make sure the workpiece moves against the direction of the router bit's rotation (counter-clockwise on a standard router table).
