Indiana Hero🇺🇸

On this day in 1967, Private First Class Sammy Davis went above and beyond the call of duty while serving our nation during the Vietnam War, for which he would later receive the Medal of Honor.

During a fierce nighttime assault on his fire support base, Pfc. Davis displayed extraordinary bravery under enemy fire. As mortar rounds and a reinforced Viet Cong battalion attacked from across a nearby river, he seized a machine gun to cover his crew and continued fighting after a direct hit from an enemy recoilless rifle threw him to the ground.

Ignoring his wounds and warnings to take cover, Pfc. Davis repeatedly loaded and fired a burning howitzer alone, sending multiple rounds into the advancing enemy. When he saw three wounded comrades stranded across the river, he crossed on an air mattress despite his injuries and inability to swim.

Standing exposed, he fired on the enemy to protect the wounded, then pulled all three men back to safety. Refusing medical aid, Sgt. Davis returned to battle, helping repel the attack.

His courage and selfless devotion to his comrades reflect the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

Preserving stories like Davis’ is essential—to honor the sacrifice and to inspire future generations with examples of valor, integrity, and service. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is committed to ensuring these incredible acts of bravery are never forgotten and continue to serve as a beacon of hope and resilience for our nation.
