As we get ready to commemorate Juneteenth, the day 160 years ago that enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas got the news that they were free, a whole two years after the rest of the nation, I’m grappling with how others are seeing their dignity being stripped by the same colonial forces our ancestors faced only a few generations ago.

It’s been a heavy month in the nation and particularly in L.A. and Inglewood. ICE has been ordained by the president to terrorize undocumented immigrants, going so far as to profile Latino and Black presenting people, without a warrant and without actually verifying their citizenship status. Even if they aren’t a citizen, any undocumented affairs requires due process and they have a right to have a judge hear their case before a decision is made about renewing a visa, validating a green card or requiring a return to their homeland.

Black Lives Matter Grassroots Condemns ICE Raids,
Defends Latinx Community

Black Lives Matter Grassroots has released a strong statement opposing the recent ICE enforcement operations, calling the raids a “racist terror campaign” that targets and traumatizes immigrant communities under the false pretense of public safety.

From their website, BLM issued the following statement: “Beloved Family… Donald
Trump has declared war on the people. In the few weeks since his inauguration, we
have witnessed horrifying stories of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids carried out under his administration’s orders to round up undocumented people. These raids have taken place in schools, at public transit stops, in grocery stores, and at homes – spaces where we should all be free and safe.

With ICE Back on the Streets, Inglewood Vendors
Vanish from Boulevards

The Trump administration’s pause on workplace immigration raids was short lived. As someone who’s yet to implement policies that don’t disrupt one sector or another of the economy or the public at large, it comes as no surprise that Trump’s vow to protect migrants in the farm, hotel, construction and restaurant industries, was all gas.

It appears Donald Trump is bored of his day job. The President of the United States of America has been busy sending Immigration Customs Enforcement and the National Guard out to Los Angeles, writing his “big, beautiful bill” and squabbling with Elon Musk over the proposed bill.

But that’s old news. His latest venture could be returning to his first act as an entrepreneur. Trump Mobile, the latest cell phone and accompanying text and call service is coming to a mobile retailer near you. Spearheaded by Donald Trump Jr, Trump Mobile, will run consumers
$47.45, “an apparent reference to Trump's résumé as the nation's 45th and 47th president,” Max Zahn at ABC News reports. While the services provided are pretty standard, some of the offerings that could drive competition are the reported telehealth features built into the phone and service as well as free international calls to over 100 countries. The call and text service will be backed by the big three U.S. carriers - A.T.&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Ten people were injured late Saturday night, June 14th,
when a vehicle plowed into a crowd of pedestrians near
the intersection of South Prairie Avenue and West Century
Boulevard, just outside the Hollycrest Hotel and adjacent
to the Intuit Dome and SoFi Stadium.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m., shortly after the
conclusion of a CONCACAF Gold Cup match between
Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Attendees were
dispersing from the venue when a vehicle veered into a
group of pedestrians walking along Century Boulevard.

The late Rush Limbaugh used to sermonize that, “words mean things.” The word
"Doge" has a couple of distinct meanings; historically, "Doge" refers to an elected lord and head of state in medieval Venetian and Renaissance periods, and later it transferred onward into the time of Benito Mussolini. Somehow, today's search for Government Efficiency has, perhaps unfortunately or ironically, carried DOGE back into our popular lexicon of modern usage.

When it comes to standing in solidarity with social movements, especially in the fight for Black & Brown liberation, support for any particular cause can feel overwhelming. Why is that? For one, not everyone understands nor demonstrates solidarity in the same way. By definition, solidarity means “unity and mutual support among people with common interests.” But in real life, that support takes on different forms, some visible, others behind the scenes.

Repost from

Morningside is officially closed. Its hard to believe that after almost 75 years, a legacy school that gave birth to some of the most amazing people this city has ever produced, is gone. What will you miss most about the MHS?

In what many are calling the most dangerous legislative moment in recent American history, the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” is now advancing toward a full Senate vote. Championed aggressively by the former president—who has referred to the measure as his “masterpiece”—the bill’s Section 70302 has set off constitutional alarms nationwide. This clause would bar federal courts from enforcing contempt charges, a critical legal mechanism historically used to ensure compliance with subpoenas and uphold the rule of law.

Legal scholars and watchdog organizations have warned that this single clause, buried deep in the legislative jargon, effectively turns the executive branch into a rogue entity, unchecked by either the judiciary or Congress. It’s a development that has echoes not only of banana republics but of authoritarian regimes like Russia, China, and North Korea—nations where power is absolute and the law is merely a tool of the ruler.

The cloudy sky was a fitting backdrop to Inglewood’s 76 th Annual Memorial Day Service. People gathered under the large white tent, on the South Mall of Inglewood City Hall to reflect and honor military veterans. A memorial plaque next to the tent bears the names of 148 veterans who served in World War II and the Korean War.

U.S. Marine Veteran Alejandro Salinas emceed the service which paid tribute to all
soldiers who have fought in the American armed forces. Sharing his early experience, Salinas spoke about his father who fought in the Mexican War. “It lit a fire in me,” he said.

Women of the Jackie Robinson Unit 252 Color Guard marched proudly—some holding flags that represented the United States, California and the American Legion.

One by one, veterans gave their remarks before an appreciative crowd, including Raul Aguilar, a 3-year Army veteran with 2 purple hearts, who fought in the Viet Nam War; and Bob Brown who served in the Air Force during the Cold War Era. Some spoke in honor of their deceased loved ones.
