I’ve been to Mackinac Island about a half-dozen times over the years, but last summer my kids and I went on a little “island tour” of our own—right here in Michigan. No palm trees, just Pure Michigan adventures.
First up was a day trip to South Manitou Island on a beautiful, slow wagon ride around the island for a history tour. According to Brook: “The worst day ever.” According to Max: “I’d live here if I could.”
Next was Beaver Island, where we rented a beat-up old truck from a local legend who went only by his first name. It was perfect. The kids were thrilled, and I could finally relax—because, honestly, one more scratch on that truck wasn’t going to matter.
Last stop: Drummond Island. First time on a mini car ferry. First time renting ATVs. And first time fearing for my life as Max powered us up steep, rocky hills like he’d been driving up rocks for years.
We didn’t make it to Mackinac that trip, but there’s something special about island life—even the rugged kind. Lindsay captures that feeling beautifully in her story.
