Hello friends 🙂 We opened submissions for Foolish volume 8.5 today! As our previous EIC Ellie Zupancic told me, “art shouldn’t stop in the wake of oppression, fear, or violence.” We want to hear your voices and amplify the words of those whose messages have gone unheard for too long.

Additionally, we’d like to welcome submissions from those whose BFA exhibits had to be canceled. Contact me at [email protected] or comment below with any questions or concerns!

We adore our new Managing Editor, Nicole!

It's ! Meet Nicole Pagliari! 🥰 Here's what Nicole has to say about her experiences with the Magid Center:

"For me writing had always been one of those things that I did on the side. Even when I first got to Iowa, I felt like writing came second to everything else going on. Then I found Fools Magazine and the Magid Center, and suddenly I was part of a whole community of people whose purpose was not only to create, but to push the boundaries of what that word means. Fools allows me to interact with and create writing that I love while the Magid Center helps me focus my career goals and carve out my place in the publishing industry. The combination of the two have allowed me to create a hybrid publishing-writing experience that is exactly what I didn’t even know I needed."

For Later, When All My Homies are in the Room: An Interview with Hanif Abdurraqib — Fools Magazine

“Still, he says, ‘I really worked in isolation for a long time to build my skillset … I just do the work and from the work comes more work.’

So, I sit. The wind picks up and my house screams. Somewhere in that cacophony, I hear a nothingness telling me to write. It’s in this isolation, I suppose, that work will birth work.”

Don’t miss the 6 wonderful performances they have planned, including some of Fools’ longtime favorites like Elizabeth Moen & Penny Peach!

While we can't be together celebrating music, literature, and community, we're happy to share some virtual performances from the Mission Creek artists in a series we're calling Mission Creek Underground. Join us for the first video in our six part series featuring Elizabeth Moen.

A note on COVID-19 — Fools Magazine

We’ve posted an update regarding production schedule adjustments, distribution of merchandise & magazines, and how to contact us—in light of the recent community changes addressing COVID-19.

Highlights to note: volume 8 release has been moved back one week, to Friday, May 8th. Mark your calendars now, and be ready for a web-based launch online where we are working to cultivate an experience that allows us to present art and literature side-by-side in new and innovative ways.

All decisions going forth will be the result of careful consideration of the wellbeing & best interest of our contributors & members.

It is a beautiful thing to be an artist in the face of adversity; indeed, we hope you are able to find solace in any ability to read, write, or create right now. Art has been responding to crises throughout its history.

If you have concerns about our updated process, any questions, or are simply looking for someone to lean on at the moment, we are here for you. The Fools family is in this together. All editors can be reached by email and are more than happy to make themselves available to you.

Lifting the Glass: A Look Behind the Trick Mirror with Jia Tolentino — Fools Magazine

“... whenever my friends and I reenacted [High School Musical]...I demanded that I play the coveted role of Gabriella...They protested heavily, demanding reasons for why they couldn’t play the leading female character of the most popular movie amongst fourth graders. But I was adamant...Vanessa Hudgens was Filipino, therefore, I had dibs.”

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Fools is launching our first ever GOLDrush campaign! We are trying to crowdfund $3000 to ensure another year of our beautiful bi-annual magazine, opportunities for writers and artists—like literary readings, art galleries, networking events, and masterclasses.

VISIT goldrush.uiowa.edu/fools

GOLDrush will allow us to open up doors for Fools members that extend past our usual publishing ventures. We have hopes of buying equipment for our team of artists, sending writers to the famous Association of Writers & Writing Programs conference, and affording to print more copies of each volume.

“‘Event horizons, dark matter, the attraction of atoms and how they move, how they react to each other; that’s something I find endlessly fascinating. Reading and learning about that, I was able to write my song Particle in Wave, about how light is two things at once, both particle and wave. Is love powerful enough to slow the speed of light?’”

Who is in The New York Times today? None other than our own creative director, Vivian Le, for her photos of Brandon Taylor!

Recall our advance praise for Taylor's book Real Life a few weeks ago at foolsmag.com! Taylor will also be reading at Prairie Lights Bookstore on February 19th at 7pm--don't miss it!

“Real Life” follows a pivotal weekend in the life of a black gay student in the Midwest, something Brandon Taylor said was an effort to write himself into the campus-life genre he loves reading.

“Greeted by the sounds of classic rock songs of the 1980s and the smell of sourdough bread, Nodo emulates a familiar and relaxed atmosphere co-owner and operator Josh Silver describes as ‘a place I’d want to be.’”
