Seeing a few more bumbles now at this part of the summer. Earlier on, I felt the sightings in my own garden were low. I’d see only single sightings during the day. But now, the eastern Iowa bees are happy jockeying for position on my Culver’s root, coneflower, and the remaining bee balm and penstemon. This piece of a happy rusty-patched bumble bee, scratchboard with watercolor and dyes. The humble bumble. 🐝

Adding a song of mourning for the communities in Hill Country, central Texas, as the search and rescue continues. We are watching and grieving for your tremendous loss. Several ways to help remotely if you have the means. Here’s one we contributed to: World Central Kitchen , on their way with nourishment to the beleaguered area.

Visiting one of most majestic regions of our country, I was moved by the two Colorado mountain passes we took over the Continental Divide. The irony in this geological phrase found me. On this somber July Fourth, for I am wracked with worry about America’s future, here’s an offering of sweet illustration celebrating Mountain eco-diversity and some words about the policies to be put into place that will harm so many. 🇺🇸

Back from the mountains, this Grasslander is already missing some regional delights and sights. We saw Black-billed magpies (noisy but elegant!) every day, as they squabbled over territory and tidbits 🌞July is here. We carry on.

Summer Solstice arrives tonight. Not really in a celebration mood, but I thought about one of my favorite seasonal activities, berry picking. Here in Iowa, I search for the small and subtle wild raspberry found elusively on the edges of deep woodlands. I also love picking the more ubiquitous (yet loathed by many!) Himalayan blackberries of my PNW childhood. In a year of uncertainties, I’ll take a small, tasty handful of summer certainty. Hope you will, too! To the summer, a haiku and a scratchboarded botanical (hand-colored with real berry juice! 🍓)

“When day comes we step out of the shade / Aflame and unafraid / The new dawn blooms as we free it / For there is always light / If only we’re brave enough to see it / If only we’re brave enough to be it.” 🌞 —Amanda Gorman, National Youth Poet Laureate, Poet, Activist.
