she arrived one day
around mid-September
kickin' summer on its butt
sorry, dude, you gotta go
.
and like an old friend
she settled in
.
made herself at home
poured herself a cup of hot cocoa
cuddled up in a cozy chair
beside a flickering fire
.
and spent the afternoon
reminiscing about old times
.
all aglow and alive
vibrant and free
just the way i knew
is the only way
she could be

and that was fine with me

School District Five trustees hold Board Workshop to discuss redistricting options, community events planned

IRMO – The Lexington-Richland School District Five Board of Trustees held a board workshop on Oct. 7 to preview a redistricting presentation that will be presented publicly at the school board meeting on Monday, Oct. 12.
When needed, School District Five trustees hold board workshops prior to school board meetings to provide training or discuss items that will be voted upon at upcoming board meetings. Presentations can be part of the workshop, and board workshops are open to the public.

Community input opportunities on proposed redistricting plans will be held prior to a final vote to gain input from the community. Details regarding the community events will be announced during the Board meeting on Monday, Oct. 12.

“The purpose of the board workshop on Wednesday was to provide board members with an opportunity to ask questions and help them prepare for the board meeting on Monday, Oct. 12,” said Dr. Michael Harris, Chief Planning and Administrative Officer. “Redistricting is an important matter for our entire community. In addition to our board meetings, there will be opportunities for the public to provide input and get detailed information about the redistricting options.”

Engineering and planning firm Milone & MacBroom was approved by the Board in October 2019 to study capacity and growth in School District Five. The study by the company was prompted by growth in the Chapin area and a need to redistrict for the planned new elementary school in Chapin, but the firm’s study also examines capacity and growth across the district as part of that process. Any recommendations by Milone & MacBroom will be presented publicly to the School Board for implementation and approval.

During the Board’s workshop on Oct. 7, officials with Milone & MacBroom shared preliminary redistricting scenarios to balance “enrollments across all school buildings to ensure efficient and equitable use.” For recordings of board meetings and presentations, including the one presented at the Oct. 7 board workshop, visit: https://bit.ly/2ZeKp5F.

School District Five student donates food to food bank in lieu of birthday presents
IRMO –During these unprecedented times, a Lexington-Richland School District Five fifth grade student is doing what she can to support those in need.

Aleah Johnson, a student at Irmo Elementary, decided that instead of receiving presents for her birthday she would collect food to give to the Harvest Hope Food Bank. It is a mission that she started four years ago. She came up with the idea after talking to her grandmother about families who don’t have enough to eat.

“This process started as Aleah wanted to help others,” Irmo Elementary principal Shannon Fincannon said. “She saw a need and took action. Aleah is just a bright light to all that she meets. We always talk about servant leadership at Irmo Elementary because that is what we believe in. She has put that style of leadership into perfect action.”

Aleah and her family advertise the food drive through fliers distributed throughout the community. This year they donated 1196 pounds of food.

“I made a promise to this world that I would help others and I am not going to stop,” Johnson said. “This is going to keep happening and we are going to keep filling up trucks. I am going to reach China if I have too!”

With Aleah’s big heart and mission to change the world, she says the act of giving will continue for years to come and she encourages everyone else to join her.

“If you want to do something like this to help people out you can do it because it will actually make a difference,” Johnson said. “There are so people suffering at this time and they need you. It doesn’t matter if your age or your size you can make a difference!”
