Orange County banned the sale of synthetic kratom products in its unincorporated communities, citing public health risks tied to the substance’s addictive and opioid-like effects.

Dr. Steven Ey, chief of service at Hoag Addiction Treatment Centers, reports seeing nearly as many patients needing detox from kratom as from fentanyl in the past year; he praised the county’s proactive stance, stressing that regulation is urgently needed as kratom use is rapidly spreading and often goes undetected on drug tests.
