Good evening my Estill peeps. For those that plan to go to the festival you'll need to be weather aware.
I'll post updates as they become available.

Now that we are in range of the CAM guidance, I'm seeing a feature that wasn't readily noticeable before. After the main push of rain goes through early Saturday morning, we look to clear the clouds out just a bit early Saturday afternoon. By late afternoon, a batch of thunderstorm cells may fire off and drop southeast across central Kentucky. Forecast soundings show a textbook low shear/high CAPE environment over the area Saturday afternoon, so the tornado threat will be very low. However, steep lapse rates and the fact that it's still April could contribute to some large hail in these storms, and isolated reports of high wind!

In summary, the revision to my forecast is that we will need to stay alert all day Saturday. The threat will end around sunset.

A strong cold front will approach the area from the northwest tonight, with thunderstorms congealing into a line after dark, and moving south-southeast across the area overnight. These will pose a threat of hail and strong wind gusts, with locations north of I-64 seeing the best potential of storms approaching severe limits.

Gusty and Blustery Snow Squalls This Evening...

Scattered snow squalls with strong wind gusts - as high as 40 mph
- will continue into the first part of the night. Quick accumulations of 0.5 to 1.5 inches of snow can be expected through midnight, particularly on grassy and elevated surfaces.
Roadways could become briefly snow-covered and slushy under the heaviest snowfall rates along with sharply reduced visibilities.
Additional, spotty, accumulations of up to 1 inch cannot be ruled
out overnight. Watch for icy patches on area roads - especially
for bridges and overpasses - as the temperatures drop into, and
through, the 20s tonight.

Snow Giving Way to Snow Showers and Possible Squalls...

A period of steady snow will spread across most of eastern Kentucky this afternoon and then transition to scattered snow showers and possible squalls into tonight. Accumulations of 0.5 to 1.5 inches of snow can be expected through 8 PM, particularly on grassy and
elevated surfaces. Roadways could become briefly snow-covered and
slushy under the heaviest snowfall rates. Additional scattered
accumulations of up to 1 inch cannot be ruled out tonight.

Good afternoon Estill County! Lots going on the rest of the day, tonight and tomorrow.

What I know:

💨 It's windy and the winds are going to get more frequent and stronger as the day goes on.

⛈️Storms will develop late tonight. Be sure to have a way to receive emergency information tonight into tomorrow morning. Strong to severe storms with high winds, possible straight line winds and a short spin up tornado can't be ruled out.

❄️🥶 After the storms and cold front push through temperatures will drop quickly bring snow behind the storms. An inch or less can be expected. The cold sticks around for a few days with high temperatures in the 30s. Then we begin to warm back up towards the end of the week.

Everyone enjoy the warm weather today and be weather aware tonight.
